Grain hoppers and stock trailers off Vermilion farms
USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 1,113 farms in Vermilion Parish, with rice, cattle and equine at the top of the parish’s list. If your truck has pulled grain hoppers at harvest or a stock trailer to a sale barn, tell us which, and send photos of the truck coupled or uncoupled as it sits today.
Six of the Kaplan carriers on FMCSA’s carrier census list grain, feed and hay among what they haul, and four list farm supplies. A farm truck often spends the off-season parked in a shed or at the edge of a field, and that is fine: give us the road it is off and whether a tractor-trailer can turn in beside it.
Paperwork on a farm truck can be scattered between the house, the shop and the co-op office. Before you call, find the title, the current registration and any service book that rode in the cab, so the questions we ask after are only about the truck itself.
Kaplan has 17 active carriers on FMCSA’s carrier census, and 9 of them list general freight while 4 list motor vehicles. Whatever your truck carried, start by telling us the cargo it was set up for and the body or trailer it usually pulled.
The biggest fleet registered in town runs 4 power units and 4 drivers, the next runs 3 power units with 2 drivers, and a third runs a single truck, according to the same FMCSA registry. An owner with one or two trucks sells to us the same way a larger operator does: one VIN, one title, one set of photos per truck.
Eight of those carriers are private fleets moving their own goods, as the FMCSA census records them. If the truck belongs to a farm or business rather than to you personally, have the person named on the title ready to sign, or a document showing you can sign for the business.
Parish roads
Of the Kaplan carriers in FMCSA’s census, 12 run intrastate only and 5 cross state lines. A truck that never left Louisiana usually carries only state registration, so the Louisiana plate and registration card are the papers we will ask to see.
Drivers working for carriers here mostly stay near home: FMCSA’s census records 118 operating within 100 miles and 15 going farther. Since most of these trucks end each day close to Kaplan, tell us the yard, shop or driveway where yours sleeps, and we arrange the collection there.
Seven Kaplan carriers report yearly mileage to FMCSA, and their median sits at 22,000 miles a truck. Read the odometer and photograph it alongside the VIN plate; those two figures are the first things we check against the title.
Gravel pits east, rail and fuel docks beyond
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists the LA 82 / Verot Pit, a sand and gravel operation 15.4 miles east of Kaplan, and Legacy Aggregates LLC about 20.6 miles east. Dump trucks that run loads out of pits like these should come with photos of the bed, the hoist and the tailgate, as well as the cab.
Some 21 miles north-east, the North American Rail Network, kept by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, shows the Lafayette rail yard. If your tractor has shuttled freight between that yard and Kaplan, let us know whether it is a day cab or a sleeper and which fifth wheel it carries.
West of town by 21.2 miles, the Energy Information Administration places the MARINE 193 DOCK petroleum product terminal. A fuel or tank truck that works that dock can stay parked where it is; give us the gate contact so the pickup can be planned with whoever controls the lot.
Contractors and work trucks in Kaplan
Kaplan’s job total stood at 965 in 2023 on the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts (LODES). Many of the work trucks behind those jobs are single units, so a flatbed, box truck or service body is as welcome a call as a tractor.
For construction, the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns lists 12 establishments around Kaplan. A contractor’s dump truck, flatbed or crane truck needs the same things as any other: the title in the business’s name, its registration and photos of the equipment mounted on it.
Titles, new outfits and lost papers
FMCSA’s carrier census shows 3 new carriers registering in Kaplan in 2025 after none in 2024. A newer outfit may still hold the title from a recent purchase; check that the name on it matches the name on the registration before you contact us.
If a title has gone missing, the state’s title agency issues a duplicate, and you can request it before or alongside the sale. Tell us at the start that the title is being replaced, along with any lien release from a lender, so the transfer is ready when the replacement arrives.
The questions we get asked in Kaplan
- My truck hauls rice at harvest and sits the rest of the year. Can it be picked up off the field road?Vermilion Parish has 1,113 farms on USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, and many of their trucks sit off a field road between seasons. We come to the truck where it is parked; send the location and a note on how a tow rig reaches it.
- My outfit is one truck hauling around Vermilion Parish. Do you buy from owners that small? One Kaplan carrier on FMCSA’s census runs a single truck with one driver, and owners like that are who we buy from. Photograph the VIN plate and the odometer, add a few shots of the cab and frame, and send them with the parish address where the truck is parked.
