Door numbers
Sunset’s twenty interstate haulers and ten Louisiana-only ones
FMCSA’s carrier census puts thirty active motor carriers at Sunset addresses, a mix of for-hire and in-house haulers. That federal census shows 20 of them cleared for interstate work and 10 staying inside Louisiana, so a Sunset truck may carry either kind of authority. Have the USDOT number that sits on the cab door ready when you contact us, along with the title and current registration.
A dozen of those Sunset outfits, by the same FMCSA count, are private fleets moving their own goods instead of hauling for hire. If your tractor or straight truck belongs to a business like that, tell us which company name is on the title, since the signature on the transfer has to match it.
Five carriers registered in Sunset during 2025 and two in 2024, according to the FMCSA census. A newer operator can sell a first truck too; the title in the operator’s own name or the company’s name, plus a lien release where one applies, is what the sale needs.
Dry vans, lowboys and log trailers out of Sunset
Seventeen Sunset carriers mark general freight on their FMCSA census filing, while 11 tick machinery and large objects. Box trucks, dry vans and lowboy tractors all fit that mix. Photograph the truck from all four corners, plus the cab interior and the door plate carrying the VIN, and send those with your first message.
Five local carriers haul logs, poles, beams and lumber, and five more carry metal sheets, coils and rolls, the federal carrier census shows. Log trucks, flatbeds and tractors set up for coil racks belong on that list. If a trailer or a loader goes with the truck, say so up front so both are on the same bill of sale.
A 2019 median model year on Sunset tractors
Across 33 Sunset-based trucks inspected at the roadside between September 2024 and August 2026, the median model year in FMCSA roadside inspection records is 2019, and 39.4 percent were ten or more years old. A 2019 tractor and one a decade older are equally welcome here. Read the model year off the title and the odometer off the dash, and give us both before anything else.
Eight Sunset carriers report a median of 44,000 miles per truck a year to FMCSA. The three biggest fleets in the census run 10 power units with 9 drivers, 6 with 4, and 4 with 4. An owner of a small fleet can sell one truck or several at once; list each VIN separately so every title is matched to the right unit.
Where the truck is
Terminals, a rail yard and two pits nearby
The Energy Information Administration places a petroleum product terminal at Opelousas, 11.8 miles north of Sunset, and the Anse La Butte terminal 12.1 miles to the south-east. A fuel tanker that loads at either one may be parked near the rack rather than at home. Give us the exact address and a contact who can open the gate on collection day.
Lafayette’s rail yard lies 11.8 miles south of town on the North American Rail Network. Tractors that move freight between the yard and shippers around Sunset can be collected from wherever they are kept between loads, so the truck does not need to come back into town first.
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists B & D Sand Pit 19.1 miles south-east and the LA 82 / Verot Pit 24 miles south. A dump truck working one of those pits can be picked up at the site; ask the operator whether a visitor needs to sign in, and pass that on to us.
Plant jobs, builders and parish farmland
Sunset held 583 jobs in 2023 by the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts, with 50 of them, or 8.6 percent, in manufacturing. Eleven construction establishments show up for Sunset in County Business Patterns. Stake-bed trucks, dumps and service bodies that work for builders and plants like these are part of what we buy; keep any service records together with the title.
Soybeans, rice and cattle top the parish’s 1,087 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture. Grain trucks and cattle haulers kept on a farm can be collected there. If the title was never moved off a family member’s name, sort that out with the state’s title agency before the sale.
The questions we get asked in Sunset
- My tanker sits near the Opelousas fuel terminal; can it be collected there? The Opelousas terminal is 11.8 miles north of Sunset on the Energy Information Administration’s list, and we collect the truck where it stands. Send the address and who controls access to the lot.
- Whose office reissues a Louisiana title I can’t find for my Sunset truck?A Sunset truck whose title has gone missing needs a duplicate title from the state’s title agency in Louisiana before the sale can close. Put that duplicate request in before anything else, and email the VIN plus corner photos of the Sunset truck meanwhile.
- Do you buy dump trucks that work the pits south of town?B & D Sand Pit and the LA 82 / Verot Pit, 19.1 and 24 miles from Sunset per the Mine Safety and Health Administration, are both places we can collect a dump truck. Tell us which pit it is at and send the title details.
