Scott County
A corn mill on the river, and a quarry at the point
Two operations sit here and they work in opposite directions. SEMO Milling runs a corn milling operation, listed on the North American Millers’ Association’s mill map, and it is on the Mississippi — which gives it a barge option the inland Missouri mills do not have.
The North American Rail Network maintained by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics lists a single yard here, 0.62 miles out under Union Pacific, inside the town.
The crossings here are close in and there are a lot of them
That quarry sits in a denser and tighter road network than the small workforce would suggest. Twenty-nine carry a posting and twenty-three are rated below legal loads — another of the counties where the second number rivals the first.
The lowest that still admits a loaded truck is about 12.9 US tons, which takes a tandem dump across close to empty. Scott County restricts 9 of 58, a little above the state county rate of 12.7 per cent.
For a machine that means short local runs picked around a lot of crossings rather than long straight legs. That kind of work puts hours on rather than miles, and the wear lands on the brakes, the gearbox and the running gear.
Farm trucks and grain hauls off the bottom land and the mill.
- Mine did short local runs, not highway miles.Say so, because it changes what to look at. Around here the crossings are close together, so the work is short legs picked around them, and that puts hours on rather than miles.
The Union Pacific yard here sits 0.62 miles from the middle of town, and there is usually one parked near it.
