Two pits, one village
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists the Watertown Plant, a crushed-stone quarry, 4 miles west of Black River, and the West Carthage Mine, another crushed-stone quarry, 7 miles to the east. A dump truck or tractor that has hauled stone from either pit may be parked at a yard close to the quarry rather than in the village, so give us the street address where it sits and we will collect it there.
On the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s register, the FLICK PIT sand and gravel operation lies 18.6 miles north-west, and an industrial-mineral mine sits 22.2 miles east. If your truck has worked those sites, send photos of the body, the frame and the cab along with the VIN, and tell us which pit it served.
Black River haulers
Private fleets hauling their own loads from Black River
Black River has 25 active carriers on FMCSA’s carrier census, and 23 of them are private fleets hauling their own goods rather than freight for hire. FMCSA records only one of the 25 as registered for interstate work and the other 24 as staying inside New York. Tell us whether your truck is garaged at a farm, a shop or a contractor’s lot, and give the address.
Machinery and large objects top the cargo list, with 10 carriers declaring them to FMCSA, followed by general freight at 8. A lowboy tractor, a rollback or a straight truck that moved equipment between job sites fits that pattern; have the registration and the title in the owner’s name before pickup.
The biggest fleet based here, according to FMCSA’s carrier census, runs 7 power units with 6 drivers, and the next two list 5 and 4 power units. A small operator selling one truck out of a handful should keep the cab card and the service records for that unit together so they leave with it.
Milk and corn lanes
Hay, grain and milk country
Six Black River carriers declare grain, feed and hay to FMCSA, and four more haul farm supplies. Black River’s farm neighbours add up to 749 farms across Jefferson County in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, led by milk, then corn, then cattle.
A grain truck or feed hauler parked on a farm lane can be collected from that lane; tell us how a carrier truck reaches it from the road. Photos of the dump box or the bulk body, plus the VIN plate, are the most useful things to send first.
Close-to-home miles in the North Country
Of the drivers working for Black River carriers, 28 stay inside a hundred-mile radius and 9 go further, on FMCSA’s carrier census. Eight carriers reported their mileage to FMCSA, and the median is 9,250 miles per truck a year.
Write down the odometer reading and the engine hours, if the truck has an hour meter, before you call.
Arsenal Street office
Arsenal Street, Watertown, for a lost truck title
From Black River it is 6.3 miles to 175 ARSENAL ST, WATERTOWN, where the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles keeps its WATERTOWN office. If the title for your truck has gone missing, that office can process a replacement title certificate, and the department also takes the request through its DMV offices statewide.
Start the replacement before you arrange pickup; the title is signed over to us when the truck leaves. Bring the registration, your identification and the VIN to Arsenal Street, and keep the receipt the clerk gives you.
West to the yards
Massey West Yard, Watertown yard and the road to Fort Drum
Eight and a half miles west, the North American Rail Network maintained by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics shows two rail yards, WATERTOWN and MASSEY WEST YARD. A truck that has shuttled loads to either yard can be collected from the yard’s lot or from your own address, whichever suits you.
Fort Drum, a military installation listed by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, lies 12.9 miles north-east of the village. Construction firms count for 5 establishments here in the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns; if your truck works contracts on or around the post, tell us where it is parked and who holds the keys.
Two paused engine rules for Black River diesels
For a Black River diesel owner, the Advanced Clean Trucks (ACT) Regulation listed by New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation is a rule whose enforcement is currently paused. The state’s Heavy-Duty Low NOx Omnibus (HD Omnibus) Regulation is listed too, and its enforcement is likewise paused.
Black River owners selling an older diesel need no extra emissions paperwork from us under either rule while enforcement stays on hold. Keep any engine certification label legible and photograph it with the rest of the truck.
The questions we get asked in Black River
- Will you collect a truck parked at a quarry or farm outside the village?Quarries at 4 and 7 miles out, listed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration, and 749 Jefferson County farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture mean many trucks here sit away from town, and we collect from the address where yours is parked.
- Can a Black River private fleet sell just one of its trucks?Twenty-three of Black River’s 25 carriers on FMCSA’s carrier census are private fleets, and selling a single unit out of one is routine; send the VIN and photos for the truck you want to sell.
