Tracks and tank cars
The terminal north-west of town
Brookhaven’s nearest rail yard, the Brookhaven Rail Terminal, lies 3.7 miles north-west of the town centre on the North American Rail Network maintained by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. If your tractor has shuttled loads to and from that yard, tell us which trailers it pulled there, and we can collect it from a lot close to the tracks.
That same site appears on a separate Bureau of Transportation Statistics listing as a liquid bulk terminal. A tank-pulling day cab or sleeper that has served it is a truck we purchase; send the VIN, the registration and a clear set of photos of the cab, frame, fifth wheel and tires so what we see matches your description.
Dump bodies hauling from the Roanoke pit
Roanoke Sand & Gravel Corporation works a sand and gravel operation 8.2 miles north of Brookhaven, according to the Mine Safety and Health Administration. Dump trucks and tri-axles that run out of a pit like that are often parked at the yard between jobs, so give us the pit or yard address and a contact who can let us through the gate.
A second pit, Coram Materials Corp, sits 10.7 miles to the north-west on Mine Safety and Health Administration records. If your truck hauled from both Roanoke and Coram, mention it; knowing the body type and what it carried lets us ask the right follow-up questions about your particular truck.
Tankers loading west and north-west of Brookhaven
The Energy Information Administration lists North Holtsville Terminal, a petroleum product terminal 8.7 miles west of town, and East Setauket, another such terminal 13.7 miles north-west. Fuel tractors that load at either one can be sold right where they sit; tell us whether the truck stays at the terminal or at your home lot.
Port Jefferson, 16.1 miles north-west, is listed as a port by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, and Francis S Gabreski Airport, 14.5 miles east, appears there as a military installation. If your truck is stationed near either one, share any gate or access rules up front so a collection can be planned around them.
Census of local haulers
FMCSA’s carrier census counts 55 active motor carriers based in Brookhaven, with 48 running intrastate and 7 crossing state lines. The same census registers 44 of them as private fleets, so a good share of sellers here own a truck or two for their own work, and we buy from them directly.
General freight is the cargo class listed by 23 of the town’s carriers in FMCSA’s census, with machinery and large objects at 9, motor vehicles at 7 and garbage or refuse at 4. Whether yours is a box truck, a lowboy tractor, a car hauler or a roll-off, have the title and the registration together before you call.
On FMCSA’s carrier census, 132 drivers here stay within a hundred-mile radius against 36 who travel farther, and the 16 carriers reporting mileage show a median of 11,550 miles per truck. Most local trucks therefore sit close to home on weekends, which keeps a collection simple to arrange.
Checked trucks, by year
A 2010 median among Brookhaven’s checked trucks
FMCSA roadside inspection records covering 41 Brookhaven trucks checked between September 2024 and August 2026 put the median model year at 2010, with about 61 percent of them ten or more years old. Older and newer trucks alike are welcome; photos of the data plate and the odometer help us identify yours.
The town’s three largest fleets run 23, 14 and 10 power units according to FMCSA’s carrier census, and the census also logs 6 new carriers registering in 2024 and 2 in 2025. A small operator retiring one tractor and a fleet clearing several units can both sell to us; list each VIN so we can look at every truck separately.
A lost certificate goes to the Medford DMV office
If the certificate of title is missing, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles handles replacements, and its MEDFORD office at 2799 Route 112, Suite 1, Medford, is 5.6 miles from Brookhaven. Start the replacement before you list the truck with us, and keep the receipt to show it is in progress.
Per the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, a replacement title can also be requested through its DMV offices statewide. Make sure the name on the application matches the registration, and bring a lien release if the truck was ever financed.
Construction crews, potted plants and hog farms
Construction accounts for 9.4 percent of the 1,251 jobs counted in Brookhaven for 2023 by the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts, ahead of manufacturing at 6.8 percent and wholesale trade at 4.2 percent. Contractors’ dump trucks, flatbeds and stake bodies are all trucks we buy, so tell us the body type when you reach out.
Across Suffolk County, USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 578 farms, with potted flowering plants, equine and hogs listed as the leading products. A nursery box truck or a livestock hauler from one of those farms qualifies too; note any bodies or racks fitted to it.
New York lists both the Advanced Clean Trucks (ACT) Regulation and the Heavy-Duty Low NOx Omnibus Regulation with enforcement paused, per the state’s own published notices. If you have questions about either rule and your truck, ask us when you send the details.
