Ninety-two carriers registered around Canton
FMCSA’s carrier census lists 92 active carriers based in Canton, and 86 of them operate intrastate only, against 6 that cross state lines. A truck that has spent its working life inside New York usually carries a New York title and registration, so have both in hand before you call and the paperwork side of the sale stays short.
Seventy-one of the 92 are private fleets moving their own owners’ goods, the FMCSA census shows, not freight for hire. If your tractor or straight truck belonged to a farm, a contractor or a supplier rather than a for-hire outfit, tell us what business it served; that tells us which body, hitch or bed to expect when we look at the photos.
FMCSA’s carrier census puts the three biggest local fleets at 39, 38 and 30 power units. An owner selling several units from a yard that size can send one list of VINs and we work through them together, with one pickup plan for the lot.
Hay, feed, farm supplies and heavy loads
General freight is the cargo most often declared, by 35 Canton carriers in FMCSA’s census, followed by farm supplies and by machinery and large objects at 27 each, and grain, feed and hay at 19. Flatbeds, lowboys, livestock bodies and dump trucks all fit that mix, and any of them is a truck we will look at.
The 2022 Census of Agriculture from USDA counts 1,008 farms in St. Lawrence County, with milk, cattle and corn as the top products. A truck that hauls between dairy barns and feed suppliers is often parked on the farm itself, so give us the farm road address and describe the lane leading in to where it stands.
Short local routes and how the miles add up
On Canton rosters, 289 drivers stay inside a 100-mile radius and 110 range past it, as tallied in FMCSA’s carrier census. Most of these trucks come home to town each night, which usually means the truck is sitting at a shop, a barn or a driveway nearby when we arrange collection.
For the 22 local carriers that report annual mileage in FMCSA’s census, the median comes to 10,833 miles a truck per year. Read the odometer and include a clear photo of it with your first message, along with the VIN plate on the door jamb.
Between September 2024 and August 2026, 82 trucks from Canton carriers were stopped for a check, and FMCSA roadside inspection records put their median model year at 2018, with 34.15 percent at ten years old or more. Whatever the year of yours, list the make, model and model year when you reach out so we can match the right questions to it.
If your truck went through one of those inspections, keep the report it received with the title. Service invoices, annual New York inspection stickers and any records of what was swapped out over the years round out the file we ask to see.
Titles and the DMV office on Highway 310
The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles runs its Canton office at 80 State Highway 310, Suite 3, under a mile from the village centre. If the title is missing or still shows a lender, start there for a duplicate or a lien release before the truck changes hands.
Keep the registration with the title as well, and if the truck is held in a business name, bring whatever shows you can sign for that business. Those three pieces cover what we ask of a Canton seller at the paperwork stage.
The Ogdensburg rail yard and quarry
The North American Rail Network maps the Ogdensburg rail yard about 17.2 miles west of Canton, and the Mine Safety and Health Administration lists the Ogdensburg Plant, a crushed-stone quarry, roughly 17.3 miles in the same direction. Dump trucks and tractors that shuttle stone or rail freight out that way can be collected where they sit rather than driven back to town.
When the truck is parked at a quarry or yard you do not control, name the site contact and the hours the gate is open. County Business Patterns from the Census Bureau show 9 construction establishments in the Canton area, so tell us too if the truck is stored on a contractor’s lot.
The questions we get asked in Canton
- My truck is at a farm outside Canton, not in the village. Will you pick it up on the farm?St. Lawrence County has 1,008 farms on USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, and many working trucks here stay on them. Send the farm address and a note on access, and we arrange collection at the farm.
- Which DMV office near Canton handles a lost truck title? The Canton office of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles is at 80 State Highway 310, Suite 3, about 0.9 miles from the village centre. Ask there for a duplicate title before the sale.
- Are the ACT and HD Omnibus rules being enforced on a truck I sell from Canton? For a truck sold out of Canton, the state Department of Environmental Conservation shows enforcement paused on the Advanced Clean Trucks rule and on the Heavy-Duty Low NOx Omnibus rule alike. Include the engine model and the emissions label from under the hood in your photos of a Canton truck.
