Coil, machinery and refuse hauling in Elmira
Half of the 174 active Elmira carriers on FMCSA’s census, 87 in all, mark general freight as a cargo they carry. If your tractor or box truck is one of those general freight units, write down the body type, the axle setup and the VIN before you call, since those three details tell us which truck we are arranging to collect.
Steel and equipment show up strongly in the same register: 23 Elmira carriers list machinery and large objects, and 22 list metal sheets, coils and rolls, according to FMCSA’s carrier census. Flatbeds, step decks and lowboys from that work are trucks we buy, so tell us whether the trailer goes with the tractor or stays behind with you.
Refuse collection is its own line here, with 21 carriers in town recording garbage, refuse and trash on their FMCSA registrations. For a roll-off, rear loader or side loader, send photos of the body and the hoist or packer along with the cab, and say whether the body is bolted to the chassis or comes off separately.
Private fleets, short radius and new authorities
Of Elmira’s registered carriers, 106 are intrastate and 68 are interstate, while 117 run as private fleets hauling their own goods, per FMCSA’s census. A plumbing contractor’s flatbed or a distributor’s straight truck that has never left New York still sells the same way: we need the title and the registration, and the truck can stay at your shop or yard until we collect it.
Drivers on Elmira’s carrier rolls mostly stay close, with 330 reported working within 100 miles and 180 beyond it, according to FMCSA’s census. If your truck is out on a run when you decide to sell, tell us where it will be parked and we will plan collection at that spot rather than ask you to bring it home first.
Fifty Elmira outfits gave FMCSA’s carrier census a yearly mileage, and the middle truck among them logged 10,525 miles. Have the current odometer reading ready when you get in touch; it is one of the first figures we ask for on any truck.
Chemung roadside checks by model year
FMCSA roadside inspection records from September 2024 to August 2026 cover 85 Elmira-based trucks, and the median model year among them is 2016. A copy of your most recent inspection report, if you kept one, helps us confirm the year, make and configuration before we come out.
Close to half of those Elmira trucks stopped at roadside, 48 percent by FMCSA’s inspection records, carried a model year ten or more years back. Whatever year your truck is, bring the service records you have together in one place, and send the VIN so the build details can be checked against them.
Fleet sizes in town run from single trucks up to a carrier with 27 power units and 18 drivers on FMCSA’s census, with two others at 22 and 19 power units and 25 drivers each. If you are letting several trucks go at once, list each VIN and where each one sits, and we can collect them together.
Big Flats terminals and gravel pits
The Energy Information Administration lists the Big Flats petroleum product terminal 8.1 miles west of Elmira, and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics places the Sunoco liquid bulk terminal at 8.2 miles in the same direction. A tanker tractor that loads at either site can be collected from your yard, so tell us where it is kept between loads and who can hand over the keys.
Rhinehart Sand & Gravel, a sand and gravel operation in the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s records, is 9.6 miles west of the city. Dump trucks and tri-axles from pit work are on our list, and photos of the bed, the hoist and the tag axle help us understand the truck before we schedule pickup.
Farther out, the North American Rail Network shows the Baker Street rail yard 13.2 miles west. If your truck works near that yard or the terminals at Big Flats, give us the street address or the nearest crossroad so the driver can find it on the day.
Rail, gravel and the road toward Watkins Glen
Elmira’s own rail yard sits just 0.9 miles north of the city centre in the North American Rail Network, kept by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Trucks parked at lots near the yard can be picked up there; let us know if a gate code or an escort is needed to reach yours.
Edger Sand & Gravel LLC is listed 17.4 miles north by the Mine Safety and Health Administration, and the Energy Information Administration places the Watkins Glen Terminal 20.9 miles to the north-west. Owners working those runs can leave the truck at the pit, the terminal lot or home, whichever is simplest, as long as someone can meet us with the keys.
Across Elmira’s 14 spans in the National Bridge Inventory, no bridge carries a posted load limit and none drops below 14 feet overhead. That makes it straightforward to tell us the route into your yard; just mention any tight turns or soft ground at the site itself.
Factories, building trades and dairy farms
Factory work accounts for 1,558 of Elmira’s 13,345 jobs in the Census Bureau’s 2023 LEHD job counts, beside 410 in construction, 332 in wholesale trade and 197 in transportation and warehousing. Box trucks, flatbeds and tractors that serve those plants and job sites are trucks we buy, whether they belong to a single owner or a company’s own fleet.
Builders and site contractors run 27 construction establishments around Elmira, by the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns. A contractor selling a dump body, a crane truck or a utility body should send photos of the equipment mounted on it, since it goes with the truck.
USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 352 farms in Chemung County, where milk, corn and cattle lead. Milk tankers, grain trucks and livestock haulers can be collected straight from the farm; tell us which barn or lane the truck is parked by.
Title, registration and clean-truck rules
The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles office at 425-477 Pennsylvania Ave in Elmira is 1.1 miles from the city centre. If your title is lost or still shows a released lien, that office handles the replacement, and the replacement title is the document we need before collection.
For an Elmira owner of a diesel rig, the state Department of Environmental Conservation shows enforcement on hold for Advanced Clean Trucks and for the Heavy-Duty Low NOx Omnibus alike. Neither one stops you selling a diesel truck in Elmira today; send the title, the registration and the VIN and we work from there.
