Private fleets on the west bank
Of the 230 Highland carriers active in FMCSA’s carrier census, 173 run as private fleets carrying the owner’s own materials. If your truck belongs to a business that carries its own materials, have the company registration and the title in the business’s name side by side, so the paperwork matches the owner on record.
General freight is the most common cargo, named by 73 Highland carriers in the FMCSA census, followed by machinery and large objects at 38, motor vehicles at 27 and logs, poles, beams and lumber at 25. A lowboy tractor, a car hauler or a log truck from one of these operations fits what we buy; tell us which trailer it last pulled and send photos of the coupling gear with the cab.
The same federal census counts 198 intrastate carriers here against 31 that cross state lines. For a tractor that has stayed inside New York, the New York registration and the title are usually the two documents that settle ownership, so put both in one folder before you call.
Clinton Point Quarry & Mill, a crushed-stone operation listed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration, lies 7.1 miles south of Highland, and Peckham Materials Pleasant Valley Quarry sits 8.4 miles east. Dump trucks and tri-axles that load at either pit can be collected at the yard where they are kept; give us the street address and a name for whoever holds the gate key.
Further east, MSHA records place Route 82 Sand & Gravel 12.5 miles out and RW-Billings 12.6 miles out, both sand and gravel operations. If your truck works one of those pits and you would rather not move it, send the VIN, the plate and photos of the body and frame, and we will plan the pickup at the site.
Terminals along the river
The Energy Information Administration lists a petroleum product terminal at Poughkeepsie, 2.7 miles south-east, and another at Roseton, 10.9 miles south. If your tanker loads at those racks, keep its hazmat paperwork and tank test records with the title and registration when you contact us.
New Hamburg, a liquid bulk terminal on the Bureau of Transportation Statistics list, is 9.3 miles south, and the Danskammer Plant rail yard named in the North American Rail Network is 10.2 miles south. A tractor based near either one does not need to come back across the river to Highland; tell us where it is parked and we arrange collection there.
Short-haul radius and model years on the Highland fleet
Of the drivers working for Highland carriers, 400 stay within 100 miles of base and 87 range beyond it, by FMCSA’s census. Across the 37 carriers that report mileage to FMCSA, the median truck covers 11,000 miles a year; for yours, have the odometer reading ready along with the VIN when you get in touch.
Roadside inspection records from FMCSA covering 71 trucks seen between September 2024 and August 2026 give a median model year of 2016, and 47.9 percent of those trucks were ten or more years old. Whatever the model year on your title, the steps are the same: VIN, registration, title and a set of clear photos.
The three biggest local fleets in the census run 18, 15 and 14 power units. If you are selling several trucks from one operation, list each VIN and where each unit is parked, and we can plan the collections as one job.
Manufacturing, contractors and Ulster County farms
Highland held 1,682 jobs in 2023, manufacturing 193 of them and construction 102, according to the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts. County Business Patterns from the Census Bureau records 56 construction establishments in the area; a contractor’s dump truck, flatbed or service body is a truck we will look at, so send photos of the bed and any equipment mounted on it.
Ulster County holds 486 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, with equine, corn and cattle listed as the top types. Farm trucks and livestock haulers parked on a farm can be picked up from the farm itself; tell us whether a large truck can get up the lane to reach it.
The Poughkeepsie DMV office and state emissions rules
The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles office that handles title questions for Highland sellers is at 22 Market St, in the County Office Building in Poughkeepsie, 2.1 miles away. If the title is missing, start a replacement there before we schedule the pickup, and keep the receipt with your other truck papers.
On the state Department of Environmental Conservation’s pages, both the Advanced Clean Trucks Regulation and the Heavy-Duty Low NOx Omnibus Regulation show enforcement on pause for Ulster County owners as for the rest of New York. Neither one changes what we need from you: the title in your name, the registration and photos of the truck.
The questions we get asked in Highland
- Can my tri-axle stay at the Clinton Point stone pit for collection instead of being driven back into Highland?Clinton Point Quarry & Mill is 7.1 miles south of Highland on the Mine Safety and Health Administration list, and we collect from the site. Name the quarry staff member who can let our driver in and which bay the tri-axle sits in.
- Will you take a cattle or hay truck off an Ulster County farm?Ulster County’s 486 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture include equine, corn and cattle operations, and their trucks are ones we buy. Send the VIN, the title and photos, and say how the farm lane is laid out.
