Private fleets and for-hire trucks off Jericho Turnpike
FMCSA’s carrier census counts 406 active carriers based in Huntington Station, and 320 of them are private fleets hauling their own goods rather than freight for hire. If your truck belongs to a landscaping outfit, a contractor or a supply yard, it is likely registered to the business, so have the company’s title and registration ready before you call.
Of those 406 operations, 363 run intrastate and only 42 cross state lines, again per the federal carrier census. A Long Island truck that stayed inside New York usually carries New York plates and a New York title, which keeps the paperwork on a sale simple: one title, one state office, one signature from whoever is listed as owner.
Registrations kept coming in 2024 and 2025, with FMCSA recording 39 and 36 new carriers in those years. If you started a one-truck operation recently and are winding it down, send us the VIN and the name on the title; a recently formed company’s paperwork is usually close at hand.
Refuse, lumber and heavy equipment loads
General freight leads the cargo list at 138 local carriers in the federal census, followed by machinery and large objects at 65. Lowboys, rollbacks and tractors that move excavators between Suffolk County job sites are trucks we collect, so mention the trailer or body type when you describe yours.
Garbage and refuse is declared by 53 Huntington Station carriers, and FMCSA lists another 30 hauling logs, poles, beams and lumber. For a roll-off, packer or grapple truck, photograph the body, the hoist or arm and the cab, and note the hours on any power take-off so we see the whole unit.
Sand pits, fuel docks and the harbor
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists Broad Hollow Estates, a sand and gravel operation 5.7 miles south of town, and Coram Materials 23.2 miles east. A dump truck parked at a pit can stay there; give us the gate contact and the hours the yard is open, and we arrange the pickup on site.
West of Huntington Station, about 6.7 miles away, the Energy Information Administration places the Oyster Bay petroleum product terminal, with a liquid bulk terminal listed by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics at the same distance and the Glennwood Landing terminals at 12.7 miles. Fuel delivery straight trucks and tankers that load there need their hazmat endorsement history and tank inspection records gathered with the title.
Further out, Port Jefferson’s harbor is 18.2 miles east by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ port list, and Jamaica Yard in Queens is 23.1 miles west on the North American Rail Network. Tell us which of these your truck runs to, and where it is kept, so the collection is planned around the right yard.
Short hauls close to home
Drivers working inside 100 miles number 1,042 among local carriers, against 225 who go farther, according to the carrier census. Most trucks from Huntington Station therefore sit within reach of home at night, so give us the street address where yours is parked.
Ninety-eight local carriers reported annual mileage to FMCSA, with a median of 6,000 miles per truck. Read the odometer off the dash and include it in your first message along with the VIN, since those two numbers open every conversation about a truck.
Construction and warehouse work
The Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts for 2023 show 8,110 jobs in Huntington Station, with 970 in construction, about 12 percent. Contractors closing out a project often have a dump body or flatbed to sell, and the same documents apply: title, registration and any annual inspection sticker record.
Transportation and warehousing account for 709 local jobs, wholesale trade for 501 and manufacturing for 401, by the same LEHD tally. Box trucks and reefers from distribution work count too; note whether the reefer unit’s service log stays with the truck.
Titles and Suffolk County farm trucks
The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles office at 1815 East Jericho Turnpike in Huntington, 3.7 miles away, issues replacement titles when the original is lost. If the title is missing, apply there before the sale and make sure the name on the new title matches the person who will sign it over.
Suffolk County had 578 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, led by potted flowering plants, horses and hogs. Nursery stake bodies, livestock trucks and horse haulers are welcome; farm-plated trucks still need a title in the owner’s name.
On emissions, New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation lists enforcement of both the Advanced Clean Trucks regulation and the Heavy-Duty Low NOx Omnibus regulation as paused. Neither affects what you need to sign over a truck here.
