General freight leads North Babylon’s carriers
Of the 112 active carriers FMCSA’s carrier census places in North Babylon, general freight is the cargo on 55 registrations. If your box truck or straight truck has spent its life on general freight runs around Suffolk County, have the title in your name and the current registration card in the cab before you get in touch.
Household goods come next on that census, with 14 North Babylon carriers, followed by 9 hauling garbage and refuse and 8 carrying logs, poles, beams and lumber. A moving van, a roll-off or packer, or a flatbed that has carried lumber to Long Island job sites all fit what we buy; tell us which of those four jobs your truck did and send a photo of the body as well as the cab.
Of those 112 carriers, 72 are private fleets moving their own goods rather than freight for hire, according to the same FMCSA records. If the truck is titled to a contracting business or a shop rather than to you personally, have someone who can sign for that business ready when we arrange the paperwork.
Mostly intrastate, mostly close to base
Intrastate operators account for 98 of North Babylon’s carriers in FMCSA’s census, against 14 that run interstate. A truck that has only ever worked inside New York is likely parked at a yard or driveway in town, so give us the street address and say whether a tow truck can reach it without moving other vehicles.
The census counts 160 drivers working within 100 miles of base for local carriers and 76 going farther. Where a driver is out on a longer route, tell us when the truck will be back on Long Island and we will plan the collection for a day it is parked.
For the 18 North Babylon carriers that report annual mileage to FMCSA, the median works out to 10,000 miles a truck. Read the odometer before you call and include it with the VIN, since those two figures are the first things we ask for.
Fleets here are small: FMCSA’s census puts the three biggest at 8, 6 and 5 power units. Selling one unit out of a handful is routine for us; list each truck’s VIN separately if you are letting more than one go.
Fifty-eight North Babylon carrier trucks went through FMCSA roadside inspections from September 2024 to August 2026, those records show, and the middle model year among them was 2015. Put the model year and engine make in your first message; it saves a round of questions.
Just over half of that North Babylon group, 51.72 percent on FMCSA’s roadside inspection records, carried a model year ten or more years back. If you have a copy of your truck’s latest inspection report or annual inspection sticker paperwork, photograph it along with the registration.
Gravel to the west, fuel to the north and east
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists Broad Hollow Estates Inc, a sand and gravel operation, 5.6 miles west of North Babylon, and Coram Materials Corp, another sand and gravel site, 22.6 miles north-east. A dump truck that hauls aggregate from either one can be collected where it sits between loads; tell us the yard and who holds the gate key.
Two petroleum product terminals appear in Energy Information Administration listings near town: Oyster Bay, 14.5 miles north-west, and North Holtsville Terminal, 14.7 miles east. Tank trucks that load at those racks are on our list too; name the terminals the truck served so we know its work history.
Liquid bulk terminals listed by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics include Global, 14.5 miles north-west, and Global Companies, 18.2 miles west, while the port at Port Jefferson lies 20.1 miles north-east. A tractor based near any of them does not need to be driven back to North Babylon for us to collect it.
Brookhaven Rail Terminal, a rail yard 21.2 miles east on the North American Rail Network kept by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, rounds out the freight sites nearby. If your truck drays loads off that yard, give us the lot where it is usually left between jobs.
Contractors in town, nurseries and horse farms out east
The Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts put 3,834 jobs in North Babylon in 2023, 194 of them in construction, a 5.1 percent share. North Babylon’s ZIP area holds 42 construction establishments on the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns. Contractors selling a pickup with a dump body or a stake truck should have the business registration that matches the title.
Suffolk County held 578 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, with potted flowering plants, horses and hogs leading the list. A farm truck or livestock hauler from out east can be sold from the farm itself; send the farm address and a photo of the title.
Titles, new carriers and New York rules
If the title is lost, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles office at 927 Carmans Rd in the Carmans Plaza Shopping Center, Massapequa, is 5.9 miles from North Babylon. Request a duplicate there before the sale so the name on it matches yours.
FMCSA’s census logged 6 new North Babylon carriers in 2025 and 3 in 2024. A newer operation selling its first truck should bring the registration, the title and the USDOT number it filed under.
On the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s pages, both the Advanced Clean Trucks regulation and the Heavy-Duty Low NOx Omnibus regulation are listed with enforcement paused. Neither rule changes what you need to hand over: title, registration, keys and photos.
The questions we get asked in North Babylon
- My dump truck is parked at the Broad Hollow gravel yard; should I haul it home before you collect?Broad Hollow Estates Inc, the sand and gravel operation the Mine Safety and Health Administration lists 5.6 miles west of North Babylon, is close enough that we collect from the yard itself. Name the yard contact who opens the gate for our driver.
- I lost the title to my North Babylon box truck; which Motor Vehicles counter is closest? The Massapequa office of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, at 927 Carmans Rd, is 5.9 miles away and issues duplicate titles. Take your licence and the truck’s VIN to the Carmans Plaza counter.
- My straight truck has never left New York State; does that matter for the sale?Ninety-eight of North Babylon’s 112 carriers on FMCSA’s census run intrastate only, so a New York-only truck is the usual case here. Email us its VIN, odometer figure and a few photos from the Suffolk County yard where it sits.
- Do the paused clean-truck rules affect selling my diesel?Enforcement is paused for both New York clean-truck rules, Advanced Clean Trucks and the Heavy-Duty Low NOx Omnibus, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation. The sale needs the same title and registration either way.
