General freight, lowboys and car haulers from Rome
FMCSA’s carrier census lists 291 active carriers based in Rome, and 139 of them declare general freight as a cargo they carry. If your tractor or straight truck has been doing mixed freight runs out of the city, have the title and current registration in the same name before you contact us; that is the first thing we check.
Machinery and large objects show up on 55 Rome carrier filings, motor vehicles on 35, according to the same FMCSA census. Lowboys, rollbacks and car haulers fall in that group; send photos of the deck, the winch or ramps and the cab, and tell us whether the trailer goes with the truck or stays behind.
In FMCSA’s census, 255 Rome carriers stay intrastate and 36 hold interstate authority, and 210 are private fleets moving goods they own. A truck that has spent its life inside New York still sells the same way: we collect it where it sits in or around Rome.
Woods and farms
Log trucks, lumber and Oneida County dairies
Logs, poles, beams and lumber appear as a cargo type for 45 Rome carriers in the FMCSA carrier census. Log trucks with a loader often sit at a landing or a yard outside town, so give us the road it is parked on and whether a rollback can reach it in wet weather.
USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 834 farms across Oneida County, with milk, corn and cattle as the top products. Milk tankers, grain trucks and livestock haulers parked on a farm are collected from the farm itself; tell us which barn or lane, and who will be there to show us the truck.
If a farm truck has never been titled in your name, or the title went missing years ago, sort that out at the DMV before we arrange collection; the name on the paper has to match the seller.
Griffiss, Verona and the sand and stone pits
The Bureau of Transportation Statistics places the Rome Research Laboratory 4 miles east of the city and the Verona Defense Fuel Support Point 8.6 miles to the south-west. Trucks that have serviced either site may be parked behind a gate, so name a contact who can let us in on collection day.
To the west, about 11 miles out, the Mine Safety and Health Administration lists G W Bryant Core Sands Inc., an industrial-mineral mine; 19.1 miles south sits the Oriskany Falls Plant, a crushed-stone quarry. Dump trucks and tri-axles from pits like these are welcome, and any service records or MSHA site paperwork you kept helps us understand the truck’s work.
For a truck that worked a quarry face and now waits at the pit, there is no need to move it into Rome. Tell us which pit, the gate hours and whether a loader is on hand, and we plan around the site.
Tankers out of Marcy, drayage to the Utica yards
Two petroleum product terminals at Marcy, 13.5 and 13.9 miles east, are on the Energy Information Administration’s list for the area. Fuel tankers and bobtails that load at Marcy should come with their tank inspection paperwork and the registration for both the tractor and the tank trailer if they sell together.
The North American Rail Network, kept by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, shows the Utica (NYSW) yard 15.3 miles south-east and a second Utica yard at 16.2 miles. Drayage tractors that shuttle between those yards and Rome warehouses fit what we purchase; send the VIN and an odometer photo first.
Census Bureau LEHD job counts for 2023 put 573 Rome jobs in transportation and warehousing, 3.8 percent of 14,966 in all. If you drove for one of those employers and now own the truck outright, the title in your name is all the ownership proof we need.
Low clearances and short-haul drivers
The National Bridge Inventory records 50 bridges in Rome, one of them load-posted and one under 14 feet. The National Bridge Inventory puts the low one on Golf Course Road over the Mohawk River at 11ft 3in; tell us if the truck is parked on that side and we will route the collection around it.
Rome carriers report 852 drivers working within 100 miles of base and 403 beyond it, according to FMCSA’s census. Among the 57 carriers that filed mileage, the median truck covered 7,588 miles a year, a figure the same census carries; have a current odometer reading ready when you call.
Fleet sizes vary widely here: in the FMCSA census one Rome fleet runs 340 power units with 319 drivers, another 122 with 110, and a third 67 with 67. Selling several trucks at once is handled truck by truck, so a list of VINs and where each one is parked gets things moving.
Titles, inspections and the Dominick Street office
The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles runs its Rome office at 301 West Dominick St, 1.7 miles from the city centre. That is where to apply for a duplicate if the title is lost, and where a lien release can be recorded before collection.
FMCSA roadside inspection records between August 2024 and August 2026 cover 285 trucks from Rome carriers, with a median model year of 2020 and 24.2 percent ten or more years old. Whatever the year, send the VIN, a photo of the door sticker and any inspection or service records you have.
On the state rules, New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation lists enforcement of the Advanced Clean Trucks regulation and the Heavy-Duty Low NOx Omnibus regulation as paused. Tell us the engine year on the emissions label so the paperwork matches the truck.
The questions we get asked in Rome
- Which Rome office replaces a lost New York title? The New York State DMV office at 301 West Dominick St in Rome, 1.7 miles from the centre, handles duplicate titles. Bring your registration and ID, and let us know once the new title is in hand.
- The dump truck is parked at a quarry near Oriskany Falls. Must I tow it all the way north to Rome myself? The Oriskany Falls Plant is 19.1 miles south of Rome on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s list, and we collect from there. Tell us who at the Oriskany Falls Plant can open up for us, and on which weekdays the crushed-stone crew is there.
- Do you take farm trucks from Oneida County dairies?Oneida County has 834 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, with milk at the top of the list, and milk tankers and farm straight trucks are trucks we purchase. Send photos and the title, and tell us which farm lane it is on.
- My log truck sits at a landing outside Rome. Will a rollback get to it off the logging road?Forty-five Rome carriers list logs and lumber in FMCSA’s carrier census, and many of their trucks wait at landings like yours. Tell us the road, the access in mud season and whether the loader comes with the truck.
