Two terminals two and a half miles out
The Energy Information Administration lists the Buffalo Terminal 2.5 miles south-west of Tonawanda and the Tonawanda terminal 2.5 miles west, both petroleum product terminals. If your tanker or fuel truck loads at either rack, tell us which one and keep any terminal access cards or loading paperwork with the title, since those show the work the tractor and tank have done.
A truck parked at a terminal lot cannot always be reached without an escort. When you contact us, name the lot, the person who controls the gate and the hours the yard is open, and we plan the collection around those three details rather than asking you to move the truck.
Kenmore, East Buffalo and the bulk transfer sites
According to the North American Rail Network kept by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the Kenmore rail yard is 3 miles south of town and East Buffalo is 8.7 miles south-east. Day cabs that shuttle loads off those yards usually sit near them between shifts, so give us the yard name and the closest cross street.
Further out, Transflo CSXT at 9 miles and Norfolk Southern TBT at 9.6 miles are liquid bulk terminals on the Bureau of Transportation Statistics list, with the Buffalo intermodal ramp at 9.8 miles. If your tractor pulled tank trailers or containers through those gates, send the VIN, the odometer reading and photos of the fifth wheel, the frame and the cab interior.
Freight, refuse and lumber haulers on the census
FMCSA’s carrier census counts 320 active carriers based here, 271 of them intrastate and 48 interstate, with 232 operating as private fleets that haul their own goods. A private fleet selling a single unit can send us the title and the registration in the company name; we deal with whoever signs for the business.
By cargo, the same FMCSA census shows 136 carriers hauling general freight, 43 moving machinery and large objects, 34 hauling garbage and refuse and 33 carrying logs, poles, beams and lumber. Roll-offs, lowboys, log trailers and box trucks all fit what we buy, and listing the body type and any equipment mounted on the chassis in your first message saves a round of questions.
Mileage reported to FMCSA by 68 Tonawanda carriers puts the median at 12,477 miles per truck each year. Registrations recorded in the carrier census added 14 new carriers in 2024 and 12 in 2025, and a newer operator selling a first truck needs only the title, the registration and a photo ID to start.
Fleet scale
A big fleet beside owner-operators
The biggest carrier on the FMCSA census here runs 2,014 power units with 1,180 drivers, and the next two run 142 and 117 units. Fleet managers retiring several trucks at once can send a list with each VIN and its parking location, and we work through them one title at a time.
Drivers based in Tonawanda split between short and long hauls: FMCSA records 1,084 drivers working within 100 miles and 1,617 beyond that radius. A sleeper that spends weeks away may be parked at a distant yard when you decide to sell, and that is fine; tell us the city and state where it sits.
Clearance where the state route crosses East Niagara Street
Of the 12 bridges the National Bridge Inventory records in Tonawanda, none carries a posted load limit and one has under 14 feet of clearance. The National Bridge Inventory lists that one as Route 384 crossing East Niagara Street, with 11ft 8in underneath.
If your truck is parked on a street that passes beneath that span, mention it so the collection route avoids East Niagara Street. A tall box truck, a reefer or a car carrier parked nearby needs a way out that stays clear of that underpass.
Titles, jobs and county farms
A lost title is replaced through the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles office at 500 Wheatfield St in North Tonawanda, 2.1 miles away. Start that request before you contact us if the original is missing, and keep the receipt to show the replacement is under way.
The Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts for 2023 put 6,087 jobs in Tonawanda: 1,075 in manufacturing, 858 in construction, 551 in transportation and warehousing and 257 in wholesale trade. Dump trucks, flatbeds and straight trucks from contractors and plants here should come with their service records if you kept them.
Across Erie County, USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 918 farms, led by milk, corn and soybeans. Milk tankers and grain trucks parked on a farm can be collected from the farm itself; give us the road name and a phone number for whoever is there.
The questions we get asked in Tonawanda
- Does the Advanced Clean Trucks regulation affect selling my diesel in Erie County?New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation lists both the Advanced Clean Trucks regulation and the Heavy-Duty Low NOx Omnibus regulation with enforcement paused, and neither is a barrier to selling the truck you own now.
- Will you pick up a tractor sitting by the Kenmore rail yard?Kenmore, the rail yard 3 miles south on the North American Rail Network, is close enough that we come to the truck where it sits. Tell us who controls the lot and when it is open.
- Which Tonawanda bridge should a high box truck avoid?Route 384 over East Niagara Street has 11ft 8in of clearance, the only one of Tonawanda’s 12 bridges in the National Bridge Inventory under 14 feet, so tell us if your truck is parked on that route.
