Stone and salt
Grand River stone and Fairport salt, five miles up the shore
Aggregate trucks from Mentor-on-the-Lake have a short run to the Grand River Operation, a crushed-stone quarry that Mine Safety and Health Administration records place 4.8 miles to the north-east. A dump truck or tri-axle that has hauled aggregate out of that pit can be sold from wherever it sits tonight, whether that is a home driveway or a lot near the quarry gate. Give us the street address and the name of whoever can let us in.
At 4.9 miles north-east, the Morton Salt Fairport Mine appears in the same Mine Safety and Health Administration records as an industrial-mineral mine. Tractors and dumps that have moved salt out of Fairport qualify the same way as anything else we buy. Before you call, photograph the cab, the frame, the bed or fifth wheel and the tires, and have the title in the registered owner’s name to hand.
Rail east and west
Painesville rails to the east, Collinwood rails to the south-west
East of town by 5.3 miles, the North American Rail Network maintained by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics places the PAINESVILLE rail yard. A day cab that has shuttled loads to and from that yard can stay parked in Lake County; we collect it there. Leave it at the yard or at home and give us the address.
Heading the other way, 14.4 miles south-west, that same rail network shows the COLLINGWOOD yard, and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics lists the Cleveland, OH - Collinwood Yard intermodal ramp at 14.9 miles. If your sleeper or day cab pulls containers off that ramp, send the VIN and the current odometer reading first, then the registration card, and the remaining questions are short.
Tankers on the Norfolk Southern TBT run
Norfolk Southern TBT, a liquid bulk terminal, stands 13.1 miles south-west of Mentor-on-the-Lake according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Tractors that pull tank trailers in and out of a site like that are on our list. Send any service records or inspection sheets you have kept for yours along with the photos.
Selling the tractor and keeping the tanker, or selling both, is your call; just say which when you first contact us. If the trailer carries its own title or plate, have that paperwork separate from the tractor’s so each unit is clear from the start.
Quarry sand
Best Sand at Chardon, south-east of town
The Mine Safety and Health Administration also records Best Sand - Chardon, an industrial-mineral mine 14.6 miles south-east of town. Sand haulers that run between Chardon and the lakeshore may be parked at either end of that route, and either end is fine for a pickup.
Tell us which yard the truck is in, whether a loader or a gate code is needed to reach it, and who holds the keys. If the title has gone missing, mention it at the outset so we can talk through the replacement before collection is set.
Payrolls in town, soybean and cattle farms around it
Employers in Mentor-on-the-Lake accounted for 801 jobs in 2023 under the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts. Small box trucks, service bodies and pickups-turned-work-trucks from businesses on that payroll are welcome alongside heavy tractors, and a short description of what the truck did for the business tells us most of what we need.
Across the county, USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 243 farms in Lake County, with soybeans, corn and cattle as the leading products. A grain truck, a stake bed or a cattle hauler parked behind a barn can be collected from the farm; send a photo of the data plate on the door jamb with the rest.
