Coil, machinery and Mentor’s plants
Manufacturing accounts for 10,004 of the 33,807 jobs in Mentor, 29.6 percent, according to the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts for 2023. If your flatbed or step deck has hauled out of a plant here, send photos of the deck, the tie-down points and the cab together, so we can see the whole rig before we talk about the truck.
Among the 148 active carriers that FMCSA’s carrier census places in Mentor, 21 list metal sheets, coils and rolls as cargo and 17 list machinery and large objects. A tractor set up for coil or heavy machinery is one we will look at; write down the trailer it usually pulled and any securement gear that goes with the sale.
Wholesale trade holds 1,856 Mentor jobs on the 2023 LEHD job counts from the Census Bureau. A box truck or straight truck that delivered for a distributor is welcome too, so have the registration in the name that matches the title before we arrange collection.
Fairport salt, Grand River stone and the Chardon sand pits
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists the Morton Salt Fairport Mine 5.2 miles north-east of Mentor and the Grand River Operation, a crushed-stone quarry, 5 miles in the same direction. If your dump truck is parked at a yard out toward Fairport or Painesville, leave it there and give us the gate contact.
South-east of town, Best Sand at Chardon sits 12.4 miles out and Arms Sand & Gravel 18 miles out, both on Mine Safety and Health Administration listings. For a tri-axle or end dump that has worked those pits, bring the title, the current registration and the VIN, and tell us whether the body comes with it.
Painesville yard to Collinwood
Painesville rail yard is 4.5 miles north-east on the North American Rail Network kept by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, and the Collingwood yard lies 14.4 miles south-west. A day cab that shuttled between those yards and the plants in Mentor can be collected at the terminal lot if the owner of that lot agrees.
To the south-west, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics records the Collinwood Yard intermodal ramp in Cleveland 14.9 miles away and Norfolk Southern TBT, a liquid bulk terminal, 12.9 miles south-west. Have the VIN and the odometer reading ready when you call about a container tractor or a tank-hauling unit from those sites.
Mentor’s for-hire carriers and in-house fleets
FMCSA’s carrier census counts 83 Mentor carriers working intrastate, 64 working interstate and 64 private fleets that haul their own goods. If the truck belonged to a company’s own fleet, bring a letter or signed authority from whoever holds the title so the paperwork closes cleanly.
Drivers here split almost evenly: 260 stay within 100 miles and 268 go beyond, by FMCSA’s carrier census. Ten new carriers registered in 2025 and eight in 2024 under the same FMCSA census, so if you started out recently and are selling a single tractor, the title and your USDOT number are enough to start.
At the top end, FMCSA’s carrier census shows one Mentor operation with 40 power units and 40 drivers, another with 36 units and 57 drivers, and a third at 25. Selling several trucks at once is fine; send one list of VINs with where each unit is parked and we will plan the collections as one job.
Model years on Lake County inspections
Of the 101 Mentor-carrier trucks stopped between September 2024 and August 2026, FMCSA roadside inspection records put the median model year at 2020, with 15.8 percent ten or more years old. Whatever the year of yours, list the make, model and engine so we know which truck we are talking about.
Forty-eight Mentor carriers gave FMCSA annual mileage, and the midpoint they report is 27,299 miles for each truck. Read the odometer and the engine hours off the dash and send a photo of each with the rest of the pictures.
Lake County bridges, contractors and farm ground
None of Mentor’s 27 bridges carries a load posting or clears under 14 feet, by the Federal Highway Administration’s National Bridge Inventory. A tall or heavy truck can be reached on local roads, so give us the street address where it sits and we plan the route from there.
Lake County holds 145 construction establishments and 5 warehousing establishments in the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns, and construction employs 1,196 Mentor workers on LEHD job counts. USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture records 243 farms in the county, growing soybeans and corn and raising cattle. A contractor’s dump, a grain truck or a livestock hauler from either line of work is one to tell us about, with the title in hand.
