Two rail yards just inland from the lakefront
Less than a mile out, the Ford Jct yard sits 0.8 miles south-east of Sheffield Lake’s centre on the North American Rail Network that the Federal Railroad Administration maintains with the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. A tractor or straight truck that shuttles to a yard that close usually stays parked near home between runs, so give us the street address and say whether the gate or driveway is clear for a tow rig.
South Lorain yard lies 2.8 miles due south on the North American Rail Network. If the truck is kept on a lot near the tracks rather than at your house, tell us who controls the lot and send a contact name, so the collection can be booked with whoever holds the key.
Ten active carriers, mostly general freight
Of the 10 carriers with a Sheffield Lake address that are active in FMCSA’s carrier census, 7 list general freight as their cargo. One hauls refrigerated food, one carries garbage and refuse, and one moves household goods. Whichever line yours is in, have the title and current registration in the cab or in hand before you call, along with the VIN.
Seven of those ten operate intrastate only and three cross state lines, according to the same federal carrier census, which also counts three as private fleets moving their own goods. An interstate unit may carry apportioned plates and a cab card; photograph both along with the title so the paperwork for an Ohio truck that ran outside Ohio is settled at the start.
No outfit in town runs a large yard of trucks. The biggest one on FMCSA’s census runs 4 power units with a single driver, and the next two run one truck apiece. A one-truck owner can sell the only tractor in the business through us; send photos of each side, the cab, the frame and the tires, plus any service records you kept.
The Energy Information Administration lists the Lorain petroleum product terminal 13.2 miles south-east of town and the Cleveland terminal 21.4 miles east. A fuel tanker or day cab that loaded at either one can be sold from its yard; tell us which terminal it worked so we know the trailer setup before we look at photos.
Toward downtown Cleveland, Cleveland Terminal is a liquid bulk terminal 21.6 miles east on Bureau of Transportation Statistics records. If your tractor ran tank loads between there and the Lorain racks, we collect from either end of that run, not only from Sheffield Lake itself.
Stone, salt and ore
Quarry and mine sites south-west and east
Cleveland Quarries, a dimension-stone quarry, is 17.6 miles south-west by the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s records. Dump bodies and flatbeds that hauled block or cut stone from there qualify; list the body type and its maker when you write to us.
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists two more sites east of town: the Cargill Deicing Solutions industrial-mineral mine in Cleveland at 19.7 miles and the Dock #1 Whiskey Island mineral processing plant at 19.9 miles. If your truck is still parked at one of those sites, tell us the gate rules and the hours someone is on site to let a driver in.
Building trades in town, soybean and cattle country around it
Contractor pickups with dump beds, box trucks and small straight trucks from that work are welcome; a clean title in the owner’s or the company’s name is what matters most.
Across Lorain County there are 894 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, with soybeans, corn and cattle as the leading products. A grain truck or livestock hauler parked on a county farm can be picked up from the field lane or the barnyard; give us directions a driver can follow from the nearest named road.
The questions we get asked in Sheffield Lake
- My truck sits on a lot by the South Lorain yard instead of my driveway. Will your driver go there?South Lorain yard is 2.8 miles south of Sheffield Lake on the North American Rail Network, and we collect from lots like that. Give us the lot’s street address and the name of whoever unlocks it near the tracks.
- I run a one-truck household goods business. Is that too small to sell through you?Household goods is one of the four cargo lines among Sheffield Lake’s 10 active carriers in FMCSA’s census, and two of its three biggest fleets run a single power unit. Start with the VIN and a photo of the title, then the cab and each side.
- I farm soybeans outside Sheffield Lake. Will you pick up my grain truck from the farm?Lorain County’s 894 farms, counted in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, grow mainly soybeans and corn and raise cattle, and grain and livestock trucks from any of them are part of what we purchase. Tell us the township and the nearest road.
