On the limestone belt
The quarry here is worked by thirteen people and it lies 2.55 miles from the borough centre. It sits in the belt of Cambrian and Ordovician limestone and dolomite running north-east through the Great Valley.

The pit here is run by New Enterprise Stone & Lime, which also holds the Leesport Quarry up the valley. Across Berks, Lancaster and Lebanon the Mine Safety and Health Administration lists nineteen crushed-stone operations and four companies hold fifteen of them — New Enterprise with five, Pennsy Supply and H&K Group with four apiece, Allan Myers Materials with two — and no national producer appears among them.
Two of those carry lime in their names or their histories, which is a reminder that the rock here also feeds lime, cement and agricultural markets a construction reading would miss.
A dense grid, and an unusually posted one
Those 229 structures are not all open to a loaded truck. Nineteen are coded below legal loads, six of them county-maintained and ten township-maintained, and the nearest is 3.15 miles away. Across Berks County the pattern is the same shape: seventeen of the fifty-one bridges the county maintains fail that field, and twenty-eight of the townships’ 159.
The binding cap is about sixteen US tons, which admits roughly an eighth of what a legal 80,000 lb truck carries. So this is a short, crowded, heavily posted network rather than a long open one, and route choice here was continuous rather than occasional.
