Perry County
One rail yard in the county, and it is named after somewhere else
The North American Rail Network maintained by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics lists a rail yard here, the only one it lists in the county, operated by Norfolk Southern, 1.04 miles from the Census centre.
The same rail network data carries it under the name of a village on the far bank, and lists a second yard of that same name, under the same carrier, in that village 2.1 miles away.
One county yard, and a dozen facilities just over the water
Beyond that single entry, everything near this borough is in somebody else’s county. An intermodal ramp sits 1.8 miles off at Harrisburg, the Harrisburg Yard 2.7 miles away, a flour mill 6.7 miles out at Camp Hill, the Shiremanstown yard 7.0 miles off and a naval supply activity 7.9 miles away at Mechanicsburg.
The stone is the same story. The Steelton Quarry works 9.2 miles off with 16 people, the Silver Springs Quarry 10.6 miles away at Mechanicsburg with 19, and the Locust Point Quarry 12.1 miles out with 13 — all across the river in Cumberland or Dauphin County.
That shapes the work more than anything else here. A truck based in this borough earns its living in other counties, crossing bridges to do it, and in this state the authority that posts a bridge is often the township rather than the county.
Dumps off the quarries, flatbeds and day cabs off the ramps, rollbacks, box trucks, straight trucks, service bodies and pickups.
Between the Harrisburg Yard 2.7 miles off and the Locust Point Quarry 12.1 miles away the running is short and river-bound, with more bridge work and more stop-start than the mileage suggests.
The rest is the usual, from Camp Hill 6.7 miles off to the Silver Springs Quarry 10.6 miles away — retirements, estates and fleets renewing themselves.
