A yard in the middle of a trade that does not use it
That is the tension worth naming. The stone worked around here is a landscape and architectural product — flagstone, wall stone, treads and steps — sold palletised and wholesale across the country, which makes the freight long-haul flatbed rather than a district shuttle onto rail.
A slate quarry sits 15.5 miles off at Wyalusing with 8 people and the Hilltop Quarry 16.6 miles away at Dalton with 9, so the ring is small operations at long spacing rather than a cluster feeding one point.
One caution outweighs all of it. American bluestone comes from about 150 mostly small quarries and the trade association alone has 105 members, while the Mine Safety and Health Administration lists ten quarries in the district. Ten are a sample, not a census, and absence from that list says nothing about whether a place has quarries.
