Beyond those, the river carries the heavy industry. Two yards sit about six miles off at California, the Shire Oaks yard 6.3 miles away at Elrama, a petroleum terminal 6.7 miles out, and the West Brownsville yard 8.5 miles away.
Nine miles up, the Clairton Coke Works and three more yards cluster within half a mile of each other. That is a concentration of rail unlike anything else within reach of this city, and it is the reason a truck based here often works north rather than locally.
The nearest of those is a pit 8.6 miles off at West Newton with one person on the record.
