Plants and rail yards inside six miles
The Thomasville Mine lies about 2.5 miles west, York Rail Logistics about 2.0 miles north-east, the Lehigh White Cement Company about 2.4 miles north-east and the Roosevelt Avenue Quarry about 3.9 miles north-east.
Beyond them Lincoln Stone sits about 5.1 miles west, and three separate rail yards on the North American Rail Network maintained by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics lie within about 5.5 miles.
Three counties, three posting authorities
Those limits are statewide, but the posting is not. The three lime and cement plants in this group sit in three different counties — Adams, York and Lebanon — and each county is an independent posting authority for the roads it maintains.
That is the ordinary Pennsylvania shape rather than an exception. A lane running between two plants can cross several authorities without ever leaving the same rock, and a permit is needed from each of them rather than once for the trip.
McSherrystown lies about 18.4 miles off and Palmyra about 17.7 miles from Harrisburg, which puts the three plants far enough apart that no single county office covers the run.
A truck working between the Thomasville Mine and Lincoln Stone runs a few miles at a time, many times a day. That is duty-cycle wear rather than mileage wear, and it shows in the brakes and the suspension first.
