Lawrence County
A military site inside the place
The Bureau of Transportation Statistics lists one military installation here, New Castle AMSA 110, 0.43 miles from this place’s centre — inside it rather than near it, in Lawrence County.
The argument for the traffic around here is not that site. It is the ring of quarries, mines and rail yards within about nine miles of it.
Three rail yards and six workings inside ten miles
Those neighbours start close. A New Castle yard on the North American Rail Network maintained by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics lies about 3.0 miles south and a second about 3.9 miles south, with a third about 4.9 miles south, so three separate rail yards sit within five miles of here.
The New Castle Readiness Center is about 3.8 miles south-east, and the workings run west and south of it: Bessemer Quarry Plant and McQuiston Mine about 4.6 miles west, Moscipan about 5.2 miles south-east, Shenango Mine about 5.4 miles south-east and Lacko Mine about 9.2 miles east.
Beyond them an industrial-mineral working called Wampum lies about 6.4 miles south.
Where the county figure stops being the whole story
Those local authorities are not mostly counties in this state, which changes how a county number should be read. Statewide the National Bridge Inventory records 3,198 structures maintained by township highway agencies against 2,599 by county agencies, so townships maintain about a quarter more local bridges than counties do.
The restriction rates are close — 18.3% of township-maintained structures and 20.2% of county-maintained ones fail the below-legal-loads test. It is not that townships own better bridges; there are simply more of them.
What can be said is the shape: a lane out of here towards the Shenango Mine or the Bessemer Quarry Plant may cross more than one posting authority, and a permit is needed from each.
A truck running between the Bessemer Quarry Plant about 4.6 miles west and a New Castle rail head about 3.0 miles south does the same short loaded trip many times a day. That is duty-cycle wear, and it lands on brakes, clutch and suspension well before the engine.
- Ordinary. Around the New Castle Readiness Center we see contractor and fleet disposals regularly, one truck or several.
