Mifflin Junction
One rail yard, just inside West Mifflin
The North American Rail Network maintained by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics records the Mifflin Junction yard with the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway as operator, about 1.33 miles from this borough’s centre.
The yard actually stands inside West Mifflin borough next door, which has a page of its own.
Fourteen rail yards inside six miles
Those short runs have a great deal to connect. The Irvin Yards lie about 3.0 miles east, Glenwood about 3.7 miles north and Kenney about 3.6 miles north-east, with a liquid-bulk terminal about 3.9 miles north and another about 3.9 miles east at Dravosburg.
South-east the Clairton group is dense on its own: Clairton Yards about 4.8 miles, Clairton about 4.9, Peters Creek about 5.0, Clairton Yard about 5.1 and the Clairton Coke Works about 5.8 miles south-east at Lincoln.
East again, Monongahela Junction about 5.1 miles and Duquesne about 5.7 miles, with Thomson Works about 5.8 miles north-east at North Braddock. Fourteen yards inside six miles is river-valley industrial country rather than a quarry district, and the trucking is drayage.
A drayage truck between the Irvin Yards and Peters Creek does many short loaded trips a day and almost no highway miles, so the clutch, brakes and fifth wheel age long before the engine does. That is the normal shape of a truck from this valley.
- The mileage is very low for the year.Normal on drayage around the Clairton Yards. Hours and cycles age a truck here and the odometer barely moves.
- It belonged to a rail contractor.Around Monongahela Junction and Thomson Works we see contractor disposals regularly, one truck or several.
Between the Clairton Coke Works about 5.8 miles south-east and Glenwood they turn up steadily.
