The naming is worth a moment. The yard is named for a county and this place is a census designated place named for the boundary it sits on, so neither the operation nor the settlement is identified by a town name at all.

That border is not a detail here, it is the geography. Within 10 miles the National Bridge Inventory records 198 structures and 126 of them are Maryland’s against 72 Pennsylvania’s — the majority of this circle is over the line.

Which is why every structure inside the radius is counted, whatever the state. Reading only the Pennsylvania structures here would drop nearly two thirds of the network a truck out of this place actually drove, and would describe a different location entirely.

The working sites run the same way. The largest operation within ten miles is the Amrize cement plant 6.09 miles south with 106 people, and it is in Washington County, Maryland; so are the Hagerstown and Vardo yards, 6.51 and 7.63 miles south. Three states sit inside 25 miles of here, with West Virginia operations about 20 miles south-west.

Those Maryland structures are mostly generous; the restriction sits on this side. Of the 11 posted crossings in the circle, the two that stop a commercial vehicle outright are both in Pennsylvania and both north-west — 12.0 US tons operating at 3.50 miles on a township road and 7.0 tons at 4.03 miles on a state one.

An empty tandem dump weighs more than the second of those admits, so it is not a part-load crossing but a closed one for this trade. Meanwhile the Maryland crossings south and west of here rate 54.0, 56.0 and 63.0 tons, which a loaded truck takes without thinking about it.

So the direction of travel matters more than the distance. Franklin County maintains 77 structures of its own and posts 8, but the county rate does not capture this, because what shapes a lane out of here is which side of the line it runs on.

Beyond the border the ring is varied. East is the largest crew of all: Charmian 14.23 miles out under Specialty Granules with 155 people, in Adams County.

South and south-west it is Martin Marietta stone — the Pinesburg Quarry 10.96 miles south-west with 17 people and the Boonsboro Quarry 13.03 miles south with 10 — along with the Beaver Creek Quarry 10.89 miles south-east with 18. North it is Pennsylvania again: the St. Thomas Quarry 13.37 miles with 15, the Chambersburg yard and ramp about 12 miles, and the Letterkenny Army Depot 19.89 miles due north.

That is a lot of separate employers inside a half-hour drive, and a truck from this place may have served any of them without ever working in the county it is registered in.

Drayage into a ramp is its own life and it is worth saying if that is what a truck did — queuing hours rather than road miles, and coupling wear on the chassis. A truck that ran the Hagerstown lanes instead has an ordinary highway history and reads that way.
