Lancaster County
The quarry down the road is named for the line it sits on
The Penn/MD Quarry, a crushed-stone operation of the H&K Group with 10 people on it, lies 4.09 miles south-east of here. MSHA files the same site under Peach Bottom, and the name it carries names the border rather than either state.
The Cedar Hill Quarry is closer still, 3.95 miles south-east, dimension stone worked by Allan Myers Materials with 8 people. Two operations inside four miles, both pointing the same way, and both within sight of a boundary this page cannot ignore.
So the working ground here is small and it is oriented south. A truck that ran out of this village did not spend its week inside one state.
More than a quarter of the crossings inside ten miles are Maryland’s
That border shows up in the road data too. Ten miles from here is not a Pennsylvania question, and within the circle the National Bridge Inventory records 131 structures, 95 of them Pennsylvania’s and 36 Maryland’s — a little over a quarter of the network filed in another state’s book. 25 of those 36 are in Cecil County and 11 in Harford County.
That is why the figures on this page are read from every state file with structures inside the radius rather than from the Pennsylvania one alone. Reading only the home file this close to a line would have dropped a quarter of the crossings and then reported the remainder as the whole.
Six of those sixteen are Maryland county bridges, and the nearest posted crossing of any kind is 2.70 miles north on a township road, clearing 44.5 tonnes — the first one out of the village is not what stops a loaded truck.
The two that stop everything are both north-east
Those posted crossings get much tighter further out, and they tighten in one direction. The lowest inside the circle rates 3.6 tonnes operating, 9.94 miles north-east on a county bridge, and the next is 4.5 tonnes 5.97 miles north-east. Both are below the weight of an empty tandem dump, so nothing commercial crosses either, loaded or not.
Between those and a legal load there is a middle band that takes a truck part loaded: 14.5 tonnes 6.53 miles east, 15.4 tonnes 5.47 miles west, 20.0 tonnes 6.42 miles south in Maryland. South and west the crossings are workable; north-east is where a route has to be planned.
Short stone hauls into two states
So the load itself is the ordinary one for this rock — crushed and broken stone off a ten-person operation, moving in tri-axles and quad-axles rather than over the road. What is not ordinary is the market it moves into.
Inside twenty-five miles the Mine Safety and Health Administration lists operations in Cecil and Harford counties in Maryland as well as Lancaster and Chester in Pennsylvania: the Principio Quarry 14.24 miles south-east with 25 people, the Havre de Grace Quarry 15.09 miles south with 74, the North East Quarry 16.66 miles south-east with 31. The nearest big employer of trucks is over the line.
That shapes the wear rather than the odometer. Short loaded runs on posted local roads put it into brakes, tyres, suspension and the dump body, and it leaves the engine hours high against the miles. A low reading on one of these is the work being done, not a truck that sat.
Quarry work in this rock carries a silica exposure profile as a property of the material, not as a measurement of any site here. Part 46 requires site-specific hazard awareness training for over-the-road delivery drivers before work at each mine site, so a driver who ran into several operations often has the paperwork to show it.
- With the Principio Quarry 14.24 miles south-east and the Havre de Grace Quarry 15.09 miles south, plenty of trucks in this village did most of their work over the line.
- The engine hours are high for the miles. That is short stone hauling and it is the normal shape of a truck from this ground. We read the hours as the work rather than as a mark against it.
- It is parked past the low bridges north-east of here. Then the 3.6-tonne crossing is ours to work around, not yours.
Two working sites inside four miles is not a deep local market for used equipment.
Between the Penn/MD Quarry 4.09 miles south-east and the Cedar Hill Quarry 3.95 miles south-east they turn up steadily.
