Hoppers first
Grain, feed and hay lead the local loads
Half of Canton’s 58 active carriers, 29 on FMCSA’s carrier census, haul grain, feed and hay off the surrounding fields. If your tractor has pulled a hopper between farm bins and elevators, it is most likely parked on a farmstead or a yard edge when we come for it, so give us the road name and tell us whether a lowboy can reach it after a wet spell.
General freight shows up on 21 Canton carrier registrations, farm supplies on 13 and livestock on 11, according to the same federal carrier census. A cattle pot, a feed truck and a dry van tractor each tell a different story, so tell us what the truck pulled and send photos of the cab, the frame and the trailer connection along with the VIN.
Out-of-state authority
Interstate authority and private fleets in Canton
Of the Canton carriers on FMCSA’s census, 42 hold interstate authority while 16 run intrastate only, and 43 describe themselves as private fleets hauling their own goods. A farm or business running its own trucks can sell one unit at a time; have the title in the operation’s name ready, and tell us who signs for the business.
The census shows six new Canton carriers registering in 2025, after two in 2024, on FMCSA’s figures. If you started hauling recently and are changing equipment, a newer registration is no obstacle; bring the registration card and the title, and if a lender still holds the title, have the lienholder’s name and contact so the release can be arranged.
Two years of roadside stops for Canton-based tractors
Inspectors recorded 267 trucks from Canton carriers between September 2024 and August 2026, and FMCSA roadside inspection records put their median model year at 2023. Whatever the year of yours, the details we ask for are the same: VIN, odometer reading, engine make and the transmission type.
Just under one in ten of those inspected trucks, 9.74 percent in FMCSA roadside inspection records, were ten or more model years old. Older or newer, pull the service records out of the shop drawer and send them with the photos.
For the 27 Canton carriers that report annual mileage, FMCSA’s carrier census gives a median of 10,000 miles a truck. Read the odometer off the dash on the day you contact us and include it with your photos, so the description and the truck match at pickup.
North-west run
Quarries, terminals and the BNSF yard toward Sioux Falls
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists East Sioux Quarry, a sand and gravel operation 18.1 miles north of Canton, and Sioux Falls Quarry, a crushed-stone pit 19.8 miles to the north-west. Dump trucks and end-dump tractors that haul from pits like these are trucks we buy; tell us the body type and the box length when you get in touch.
North-west of town, the Energy Information Administration places the Sioux Falls Terminal, a petroleum product terminal, 16.2 miles out. If your truck has pulled fuel tankers on that run, say so at the start and keep any tank inspection paperwork with the title.
Some 17.5 miles north-west, the Sioux Falls BNSF rail yard appears on the North American Rail Network kept by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. A truck that shuttles to the yard can be collected wherever it sits between runs, in Sioux Falls or back home in Canton.
Paychecks in town
Canton’s 226 freight and warehouse jobs, by the LEHD count
Canton counts 3,033 residents, and the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts put 1,262 jobs in town in 2023, with transportation and warehousing holding 226 of them, a 17.9 percent share. Many of those trucks come home each night, so a driveway or shop lot in town is a likely pickup spot; give us the street address and a phone number for whoever holds the keys.
Manufacturing accounted for 106 Canton jobs and wholesale trade for 66 in 2023, on the LEHD figures from the Census Bureau. County Business Patterns from the Census Bureau list 15 construction establishments in the area as well. Box trucks, flatbeds and dump trucks from that kind of work are all on our list, and the registration plus the title is enough to start.
The Lincoln County Treasurer, four tenths of a mile away
In South Dakota, titles go through the South Dakota Department of Revenue, Motor Vehicles Division, which works through county treasurer offices. The Department of Revenue’s list of county treasurers places the Canton office, the Lincoln County Treasurer, at 104 N Main St. Suite #100, Canton, 57013, 0.4 miles from the centre of town, according to that same Department of Revenue list.
If the title is lost or a lender is still named on it, start at that Main Street counter before you contact us, and ask about a duplicate or a lien release there. Sign nothing over until we have agreed the sale, and keep the registration with the truck.
Corn, soybeans and cattle around Canton
Around Canton and across the rest of Lincoln County, USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 752 farms, with corn, soybeans and cattle as the leading products. Grain trucks with tag axles, straight trucks with hoists and cattle haulers all come out of that farm work, and we collect them from the farm itself.
If the truck spends harvest in the field and the rest of the year in a machine shed, tell us where it will be on the day we come and whether the shed door clears the cab. Photos taken in daylight, outside the shed, give us the clearest view.

- Will you collect a truck that works out of the Sioux Falls quarries or the BNSF yard? The Sioux Falls BNSF yard sits 17.5 miles north-west of Canton on the North American Rail Network, and East Sioux Quarry 18.1 miles north per the Mine Safety and Health Administration. We pick up at the yard, the pit or your place in Canton.
