Dunes carrier roster
Ten interstate authorities, one in-state
FMCSA’s carrier census lists 11 active motor carriers registered in Dakota Dunes, and 10 of them are authorised to cross state lines while just 1 works only inside South Dakota. If your tractor carried interstate loads under one of those authorities, have its registration and the most recent annual inspection report together before you call, since those two papers answer most of what we ask first.
Four of those 11 are private fleets in the federal census, meaning the company moves its own goods rather than freight for hire. A truck retired from a private fleet here may be titled to the business rather than to a driver, so check whose name is on the title and who in the company can sign it over.
Cold chain loads
Reefers, meat and general freight
In FMCSA’s census, 9 of the town’s carriers declare general cargo, while refrigerated food and meat are each listed by 5 and fresh produce by 4. Sellers of a reefer tractor should mention the trailer it pulled and say whether that trailer is part of the sale, so we know what to arrange to collect.
With meat and chilled food on the cargo lists of nearly half the local carriers, according to that same federal register, a sleeper or day cab coming out of cold-chain work here is a familiar sight to us. Photograph the cab, the frame and the fifth wheel in daylight, and send the VIN with them.
Long runs out of the Missouri River corner
Drivers working for Dakota Dunes carriers split 35 beyond a 100-mile radius and 15 inside it, by the count in FMCSA’s census. A truck that spends its weeks on long hauls is often parked somewhere other than home when its owner decides to sell, so tell us the address where it actually sits and we will plan the collection there.
Across the 5 local carriers that reported mileage to the federal census, the median comes to 39,286 miles per truck in a year. Write down the current odometer reading from the dash and include it with your photos; it is one of the first figures we match against the VIN.
Hometown fleet scale
Small fleets, mostly under twenty tractors
The two biggest operations in town run 15 and 14 power units, with 14 drivers apiece, while the third lists 3 power units and 12 drivers, as filed with FMCSA’s carrier census. An owner clearing out two or three tractors from a fleet that size can sell them together; list each VIN and where each one is parked.
Where a unit carries a lien from its purchase, find the lender’s release letter or payoff paperwork before the sale. A missing South Dakota title is replaced through the state’s title agency, and starting that request early keeps the paperwork in step with the pickup.
Site crews and wholesale delivery in Dakota Dunes
The Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts (LODES) show 2,060 jobs located in Dakota Dunes in 2023, of which wholesale trade held 55, a 2.7 percent share, and construction 50, or 2.4 percent. Dump trucks and straight trucks from site work here are on our list, as are box trucks used to move wholesale stock.
For a construction truck, gather any service invoices and the body or equipment details, such as the bed length or what is mounted on the frame. On a wholesale delivery unit, a photo of the box interior and the liftgate plate, if one is fitted, saves a round of questions.
Grain hoppers and stock trailers near the Dunes
Corn, soybeans and cattle lead the output of Union County’s 498 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture. Grain trucks, hoppers and livestock haulers that served those farms can be sold from the yard or field where they stand, so long as we can reach them.
Farm-plated trucks in Union County still need a title in the seller’s name to change hands. If the truck passed down through a family operation, confirm the title was moved into the current owner’s name; if not, the state’s title agency handles that transfer.
The questions we get asked in Dakota Dunes
- My reefer tractor hauled meat out of Dakota Dunes. Would you take a tractor like mine?Meat and refrigerated food each appear on the cargo lists of 5 Dakota Dunes carriers in FMCSA’s census, and tractors from that work are part of what we purchase. A VIN, the dash mileage and a set of daylight photos get the conversation going.
- The truck is on a farm elsewhere in Union County. Can it be collected out there rather than near the river?Union County has 498 farms on USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, and a truck on any of them can stay where it is. Share the farmstead’s location and the name of whoever can let us onto the property.
- Somewhere between the farm office and the cab, my South Dakota title disappeared. Which office issues a replacement for a Union County truck?Dakota Dunes titles are issued by South Dakota, so a duplicate comes from the state’s title agency. Request it before the pickup and tell us when it is expected.
