Big Sioux pits
Two quarries within a mile of Dell Rapids
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists Dell Rapids East Quarry, a crushed-stone operation, just 0.6 miles east of town, and Dell Rapids West Quarry, a sand and gravel site, about a mile to the south-west. A dump truck or end-dump tractor that loads at either pit is likely parked at the pit, at a shop on the edge of town or at your own place. Tell us which, and whether a loader or gate key is needed to reach it.
Further out, Corson Sand Plant / Quarry, an industrial-mineral mine on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s list, lies 15.6 miles south-east. If your truck has run aggregate or sand between Corson and the Dell Rapids pits, note the routes and the site names when you contact us, and include photos of the box, hoist, frame and tires along with the cab.
Mining, quarrying and oil and gas extraction accounted for 69 of the 1,090 jobs located in Dell Rapids in 2023, or 6.3 percent, according to the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts. If you drove one of those jobs in your own truck and are now stepping back from hauling, the sale can be settled with you here while the truck stays wherever it sits.
Hopper and pot trailers
Grain, livestock and feed out of Minnehaha County
Of the 70 active carriers based in Dell Rapids on FMCSA’s carrier census, 42 list grain, feed and hay as cargo, 23 list livestock and 21 list farm supplies. Hopper-bottom tractors, cattle-pot rigs and straight trucks with grain beds all fit what we collect. Send the VIN, a photo of each side and the trailer setup if it goes with the tractor.
Corn ranks first, then milk and cattle, across the 995 Minnehaha County farms tallied in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture. A farm truck kept in a machine shed or behind a grain bin is collected right from the yard; give us the farm’s road address and a phone number for whoever will be home to open the shed.
The federal carrier census also shows 49 private fleets among the Dell Rapids registrations, outfits hauling their own goods rather than for hire. If the truck belongs to the farm or the business and not to you personally, have the titled owner’s name and signature ready, since that name is what the paperwork has to carry.
Home routes and long hauls
Local loads and long hauls from one small town
Drivers working for Dell Rapids carriers split 109 within 100 miles of home and 206 beyond it, on FMCSA’s carrier census, and 51 of the town’s carriers are registered for interstate work against 19 intrastate. A sleeper that spends weeks away may be sitting at a terminal out of state when you decide to sell; tell us where it is and we plan around that spot, not around Dell Rapids.
For the 35 local carriers that reported mileage to FMCSA’s carrier census, the median came to 9,333 miles per truck. Have the current odometer reading and the registration card in hand when you call; with those two items we can match the truck to its record first.
The three largest fleets registered here run 91, 62 and 12 power units, with 70, 64 and 10 drivers, per FMCSA’s carrier census. If you manage a fleet and are retiring several units at once, list each VIN with its location, and we will arrange the pickups as one job.
Between October 2024 and August 2026, FMCSA roadside inspection records logged 55 trucks belonging to Dell Rapids carriers, a fleet whose median model year sits at 2014 with six in ten at least a decade old. Whatever the year on your title, any truck in that range is one we look at, and the model year is simply one line on the form.
Keep the most recent inspection report in the cab or with the title if you have it. A copy of the annual inspection, the latest service invoices and a note of when tires or brakes were last changed tell us the truck’s story alongside the photos.
Sidings and terminals south-east toward Corson
The North American Rail Network, maintained by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, places the Garretson rail yard 12.9 miles south-east of Dell Rapids and the Midwest Railcar yard 15.8 miles out in the same direction. A truck that shuttles grain or stone to those sidings can be picked up where the shift ends, whether that is a yard lot or a farmyard near Garretson.
At 16.2 miles south-east, the Energy Information Administration records the Corson petroleum product terminal. To the south, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics lists the NG Sioux Falls Benson Road complex at 16.5 miles and Joe Foss Field at 17.1 miles. If your truck is stored on a lot near any of these, give us the exact address and the name of whoever controls the gate, and we arrange access with them.
South Dakota title
Signing over a truck kept in Dell Rapids
A South Dakota title in the seller’s name is what the sale needs. If it is lost, the state’s title agency issues the duplicate, and you can start that request before we collect; tell us it is in progress so we know where things stand.
Construction made up 121 of the 1,090 jobs in Dell Rapids in 2023, about 11.1 percent on the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts, and County Business Patterns lists 22 construction establishments. If the truck is titled to a contracting business, bring the business’s registration details and the signer’s authority so the transfer matches the name on the title.
The questions we get asked in Dell Rapids
- My end-dump sits at Dell Rapids East Quarry between loads; should I haul it home first?Dell Rapids East Quarry sits 0.6 miles east of town on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s list, and we collect from there. Give us the truck’s current location and a contact there, and you handle the sale from home.
