Hauling at the Coeur Wharf mine
The Mine Safety and Health Administration places Coeur Wharf 4.3 miles west of Lead, close enough that a truck working the mine may sit at a yard near the site rather than in town. Tell us which gate or lot it is behind and who can let us in, and we plan the collection around that access.
Mine-site trucks often carry their own paperwork: site inspection sheets, service logs kept by the shop on the property, records of the equipment fitted to the chassis. If you have any of that, photograph it alongside the truck. If you do not, describe the work the truck did at Wharf and we will ask about the rest.
Lead payrolls
Mining jobs and the trucks behind them
Of the 970 jobs the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts place in Lead for 2023, mining, quarrying and oil and gas extraction account for 194, a one-in-five share. Those workplaces sit beside the mine sites the federal mine regulator lists around town, and the pickups, flatbeds and dump trucks attached to them are all trucks we take.
Construction holds 57 of those 2023 positions, or 5.9 percent, by the same LEHD tally. A contractor here with a dump truck or a crew-cab hauler it no longer needs can sell it to us from the job site; send the VIN, a few photos of the cab, the bed and the frame, and the address where it is parked.
South-east and north-east
Pits along the edge of the hills
South-east of Lead, 18.4 miles out, the Mine Safety and Health Administration lists CF & I PIT, a metal mine. To the north-east, at 24.3 miles, Vanderboom Pit appears in the Mine Safety and Health Administration listing as a sand and gravel operation. Trucks that haul from pits like these tend to be tandem dumps and end dumps, and they are welcome here.
A truck parked at a pit gate can stay there. Give us the pit name, a contact who can open the yard, and the hours someone is on site, and a driver will meet the truck where it stands.
North to the rail line
The rail yard and the mill up north
Twenty-two and a half miles north of Lead, the North American Rail Network kept by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics shows the Belle Fourche rail yard. Just past it, 23.1 miles from town, the Mine Safety and Health Administration lists the Belle Fourche Mill, a mineral processing plant.
If your truck shuttled material between the hills and the mill or the rail yard, mention those runs when you get in touch. A tractor or a dump that now sits up near Belle Fourche does not have to be brought back to Lead; we collect it in place.
Stock, horse and bee outfits outside Lead
Ranches and farms around Lead number 316 across Lawrence County in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, with cattle, horses and honey leading the list. Stock trucks, flatbeds that move hay and bees, and farm pickups are part of what we buy from those operations.
Farm trucks are often titled to a family member or to the ranch itself. Check whose name is on the title before you call, and if it belongs to someone else, have that person ready to sign when we come for the truck.
Getting the title right
Where a Lead seller replaces a lost title
In South Dakota, titles are handled by the Department of Revenue, Motor Vehicles Division, through the county treasurer offices. A seller who cannot find the title for a truck kept in Lead applies for a duplicate there before the sale.
Builders in the area run 19 construction firms, by the count in the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns, and a company-owned truck needs a signature from someone with authority to sell it. Have that person, the title and the current registration together, and the transfer goes through in one visit.
The questions we get asked in Lead
- Can you collect a dump truck still parked up at the Wharf mine site?Coeur Wharf is 4.3 miles west of Lead on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s listing, and we collect the truck there. Name the mine contact who holds the gate key and a driver meets the truck on the property.
- The title for my Lead truck has gone missing; which treasurer handles that?South Dakota’s Department of Revenue, Motor Vehicles Division issues titles through the county treasurer offices, so a Lead owner applies for the duplicate there.
- Will you buy a stock truck from a ranch outside town?Cattle lead the farm list for Lawrence County in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, and stock trucks from those ranches are trucks we buy. Send photos and the ranch address and we come out to it.
