Gold country hauling: Wharf south, the mill north, the pit east
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists Coeur Wharf, a metal mine, 10.1 miles south of Spearfish. If your truck has been hauling up that way and is parked at a mine-side lot, tell us whose gate it sits behind and who can let a driver in, and we will arrange the collection there rather than asking you to bring it into town.
North of town, a mineral processing plant listed as the Belle Fourche Mill sits 13.2 miles out, according to the Mine Safety and Health Administration. A dump truck or tractor that has run ore or product to that mill can be picked up from the yard it works from; give us the street address and a phone number for whoever holds the keys.
East along the county line, Vanderboom Pit is a sand and gravel operation 20.3 miles from Spearfish on MSHA’s list. For a gravel truck or end-dump based there, photograph the box, the frame and the cab from both sides, and have the VIN plate in one shot so the description and the pictures line up.
Timber, machinery and hay out of Lawrence County
Of the 89 active carriers that FMCSA’s carrier census places in Spearfish, 32 say they move logs, poles, beams and lumber, and another 32 list machinery and large objects. If yours is a log truck with a loader, or a lowboy tractor that has moved equipment, tell us what was mounted or coupled to it so we know which unit we are collecting.
General freight is the cargo 40 of those carriers report, and 21 haul grain, feed or hay, by the federal carrier census. Hay and grain trucks often sit on a ranch rather than in town; a gravel lane is no barrier, but tell us how the truck is reached and whether a trailer has to be unhooked first.
In the same FMCSA records, 65 of the local carriers run interstate, 24 stay within South Dakota and 44 are private fleets hauling their own goods. A private fleet selling one unit should have the registration in the company’s name ready, along with a letter or signature from whoever is authorised to sign for the business.
Fleet size, model years and miles in Spearfish
Spearfish’s top fleet holds 54 power units and 75 drivers on FMCSA’s carrier census, with the next two at 16 and 12 tractors. Someone selling several trucks from one yard can send us a single list of VINs with a photo set for each, and we will work through them as one collection.
Seventy local trucks went through roadside checks from August 2024 to August 2026, and FMCSA roadside inspection records put their median at model year 2018, with 47 percent dating back ten model years or further. Whatever the year on your title, send it with the VIN and the odometer reading, since those three facts let us identify the truck before anything else.
Across 38 carriers that report mileage to the federal carrier census, the median is 17,965 miles a truck each year. Have your service records or a maintenance log on hand if you kept one; if not, a short note of what the truck hauled and where is enough to start.
Construction and freight work in town
Builders hold 437 positions in Spearfish, roughly 6 percent of 7,232 jobs counted for 2023 by the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts. A contractor’s dump truck or flatbed parked at a job site can be collected from that site; tell us the hours the gate is open.
The Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns count 144 construction establishments. For a company-owned truck, keep the title, the current registration and the name of the person who signs for the business together, so the paperwork is settled in one conversation.
LEHD also places 160 transportation and warehousing jobs, 182 manufacturing jobs and 118 wholesale trade jobs in Spearfish that year. Box trucks and straight trucks from local distribution and plant work are part of what we buy; photos of the body interior and the liftgate, if it has one, belong in the set you send.
Cattle, horses and honey across the county
USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 316 farms in Lawrence County, with cattle, horses and honey at the top of the list. A livestock hauler or a ranch flatbed parked out past the pavement can stay where it is; send a map pin along with the address so the driver finds the right pasture gate.
If the ranch truck has never been retitled since it was bought, check that the title carries your name before we talk. A missing or lost South Dakota title is replaced through the state’s title agency, and the duplicate is what we need at pickup.
Yard and route
Rail, bridges and roads near Spearfish
A rail yard listed as Belle Forche on the North American Rail Network, maintained by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, lies 12.6 miles north of Spearfish. If your tractor has been shuttling freight to that yard, tell us whether it is parked on railroad property or a private lot, since that decides who we call to open the gate.
Spearfish’s 18 bridges include a single load-posted span and no clearance below 14 feet, by the National Bridge Inventory. Mention any weight limit on the road to your yard when you contact us, so the collection truck is matched to the route.
FMCSA’s carrier census recorded 7 new carriers registering here in 2025 and 4 in 2024. An owner-operator closing a recently opened authority can still sell the tractor; have the title and the cab card with the truck.
The questions we get asked in Spearfish
- My truck sits at a mine lot south of Spearfish. Will a driver come out to it?Coeur Wharf is 10.1 miles south of town on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s list, and we collect from mine lots like it. Give us the site contact who can clear a driver through the gate.
- I haul hay from a Lawrence County ranch. Will your driver come out to the pasture gate?Lawrence County holds 316 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, and ranch trucks are collected where they sit. Send the address, a map pin and a note on whether a trailer is still attached.
- My log truck’s South Dakota title is lost. Who issues a duplicate for a Spearfish owner?Spearfish trucks carry South Dakota titles, and a replacement comes from the state’s title agency. Apply for the duplicate before the pickup date and have it with the truck when we arrive.
- What should I send first about my truck? With FMCSA roadside inspection records putting the median Spearfish truck at model year 2018, the year alone does not identify a unit. Send the VIN, the odometer reading, the title year and photos of the cab, frame and tires.
