Brazoria County

The Hoskins yard is inside town, not near it

One rail yard attaches to Clute: the Hoskins yard, recorded under the operator Union Pacific, with its coordinate 1.24 miles from the town centroid — inside the place rather than merely nearest to it.

That distinction is the strongest kind of attachment this data offers, and it is worth separating from the fallback used on towns whose nearest yard is out in the county somewhere. Hoskins is genuinely in Clute. It is also the only rail-yard row attached to Clute in the node list.

What moves through it could not be determined from any source read for this page. A yard tells you that rail-served industry is nearby; it does not tell you what rides on it, and Brazoria County is not a county where guessing at the cargo would be a small error.

So read the coordinate as a neighbourhood

That 1.24 miles carries one caveat, and it belongs to the dataset rather than to Clute. The location is recorded as the mean of a track polyline’s vertices — the middle of the drawn line — rather than as a surveyed gate address.

Every rail-yard row in the set is derived that way, and the service radius attached to them is a slice-wide constant flagged as estimated rather than measured at Hoskins or anywhere else. So the yard is really in town, and the dot marks roughly where. Both are true and neither weakens the other.

None of it changes anything practical for selling a truck in Brazoria County. It is here because a page that quotes a distance to two decimal places ought to say what kind of measurement produced it.

Texas weight law

One ceiling, and a permit list written by industry

Beyond the yard, the rules that reach a truck here are the state’s, and they do not vary by county.

Texas sets gross weight at 80,000 pounds, a single axle at 20,000 and a tandem at 34,000, which are the plain federal figures. It does not grant a commodity variance the way Georgia and Kentucky do.

It grants permits instead, each written for a named industry: ready-mixed concrete, fluid milk, timber, and super heavy single-trip. There is no permit named for aggregate, stone, sand or quarry products, so those trades get the general permit and nothing else while ready-mixed concrete sits on the list.

The general permit allows ten per cent over on the axle and five per cent over on gross, with a fifteen thousand dollar bond and the holder responsible for actual damage to load-restricted roads and bridges. Texas and Pennsylvania allocate road damage the same way and are worth carrying as a pair, where Ohio instead puts a signposting duty on the mine operator.

Tex. Transp. Code § 621.101; Chapter 623 permits. Information, not legal advice.

Texas paperwork

We need a title — unless it never had one

Beyond the weight rules, the paperwork is a single sentence.

Everything after that sentence is a fix rather than a category. A lost title has a counter replacement. Where none exists there is a bonded route. Both are ordinary and neither stops a sale.

Texas brands a truck salvage where it has damage to, or is missing, a major component part and the cost of repairs exceeds the actual cash value immediately before the damage — effectively one hundred per cent, against eighty per cent in Florida, Minnesota, Missouri and Oregon and sixty in Oklahoma. Texas is the only state on file to exclude paintwork from that calculation, along with sales tax, which on a truck that has spent its life in salt air is not a small exclusion.

Brazoria County is on the Texas emissions inspection programme list. It does not reach you: diesel vehicles are exempt from that inspection, and for essentially every truck we buy the exemption settles it without the county mattering.

Tex. Transp. Code § 501.091. Information, not legal advice, and only as current as the date the rule file was last verified.

What we buy here

Those rules land the same way on every body style, and so does the offer. Whatever you drive, it does not change what we do next.

Day cabs and road tractors off the drayage lanes. Flatbeds, tankers, dump trucks, rollbacks, box trucks, straight trucks, vacuum trucks, service bodies, and the work trucks and pickups that go with a crew.

We buy all of them. Clute is inside the Houston end of the coast, so coming to you and driving it away is the ordinary case and coming to you and towing it is just as easy; we can also buy it remotely and arrange the tow, and you are welcome to drive it to us. The Union Pacific Hoskins yard at 1.24 miles is the one piece of freight infrastructure on file inside the city.

We buy complete trucks. If the engine, transmission, doors, rear ends, drive shafts, wheels or anything under the hood have been removed, we can’t buy it. Small things — a missing bumper — are fine.

Straight answers

The questions we get asked in Clute

  • Does it have to run?No. It does have to be complete — if the engine, transmission, doors, rear ends, drive shafts, wheels or anything under the hood have been removed, we can’t buy it. Rust is not a disqualifier.
  • How quickly can you get here?Clute is well inside our normal range and we come to you as a matter of course. We can also buy it remotely and arrange the tow if you would rather not be there, and driving it to us stays open.
  • Do I need an emissions test to sell it?No. Diesel vehicles are exempt from Texas emissions inspection. Brazoria County is on the programme list, which is why the question comes up here, but the exemption answers it before the county does.
  • What about the title? We need one unless the truck is old enough that it never had one. Lost titles have a counter replacement; where none exists there’s a bonded route.
  • My truck has been in salt air for years. Then we expect surface rust and we are not put off by it. What matters is that it is complete. Worth knowing too: Texas leaves repainting out of its salvage calculation, which for cosmetic damage moves the answer a long way.
  • Which yard is it, exactly? The Hoskins yard, operated by Union Pacific, recorded 1.24 miles from the town centroid and inside the place rather than beside it. It is the only rail-yard row on file for this part of Brazoria County, and what it handles could not be determined.

Why people call

Those are the mechanics. The reasons behind a call are more personal than that.

Retiring. A medical that went the wrong way. A contract that ended, or one truck too many sitting behind a shop in Brazoria County going nowhere.

Most of those aren’t happy reasons, and we don’t treat them like they are. Somebody wants a straight answer and the truck gone by the end of the week. That’s what we’re here for, across Brazoria County and around the Union Pacific yard 1.24 miles from the centroid as much as anywhere.
