Fields and farm work
A farm workforce on the edge of Doffing
The Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts (LODES) for 2023 place 301 of Doffing’s 623 jobs in agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting, a 48.3 percent share. If your truck hauls cotton modules, grain or hay out of the fields around town, it is likely sitting at a farm yard or behind a shed rather than on a street, so send us the road name and the gate it sits behind.
Hidalgo County counted 2,045 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, with cotton, corn and cattle listed first. A cattle hauler, a grain truck or a flatbed that moves round bales all fit what we collect; tell us which crop or herd it served and photograph the bed, the trailer hookup and the cab interior.
Gravel haul roads
Sand, gravel and stone along the western roads
Three and a half miles west of Doffing, the Mine Safety and Health Administration lists the Tabasco Pit as a sand and gravel operation. Dump trucks and end-dump tractors that load there usually park close to the pit or at an owner’s house nearby, and we pick up at either spot once you give us an address.
Further out, MSHA records place the Frontera Materials Mobile Crusher #3, a crushed-stone quarry, 6.2 miles west, and the Carrales Plant, a sand and gravel operation, 6.4 miles west. If your truck rotated between these sites, have the title in the registered owner’s name and a clear photo of the VIN plate ready before you call.
Construction accounts for 61 jobs in Doffing, or 9.8 percent, according to the 2023 LEHD job counts from the Census Bureau. Water trucks, roll-offs and tandem dumps used on those crews are trucks we purchase, and a phone shot of the current Texas registration sticker settles most of our early questions.
East and north
Quarry, terminal and rail ramp beyond the town line
To the east, the La Havana Pit, a crushed-stone quarry, lies 13.9 miles from Doffing per the Mine Safety and Health Administration. An owner who has moved on from hauling stone there can leave the truck parked where it is; we need only a contact who can unlock the yard on the agreed day.
Edinburg’s petroleum product terminal, in Energy Information Administration listings, stands 16.5 miles north-east of Doffing. Fuel tankers and bobtails that load at Edinburg are trucks we collect, and if you hold tank inspection certificates, photograph them along with the truck itself.
Nineteen and a half miles east, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics shows the Donna, TX - Rio Valley rail intermodal ramp. Day cabs that pull containers to and from Donna can be collected at a terminal lot or a home driveway; tell us the yard name so we can arrange access with whoever runs it.
Title before pickup
Lining up the Doffing title and the truck’s records
If the title to a truck kept in Doffing has gone missing, ask the Texas title office for a replacement before you contact us. The name printed on that title has to match the person signing the sale, so sort out any change of owner at the same time.
Keep together whatever records the truck carries: the registration, service invoices, scale tickets from the pits or receipts from the gin. None of these is required, yet each one helps us describe the truck accurately when we set up the collection.
The questions we get asked in Doffing
- Can my tandem dump stay beside the Tabasco Pit for pickup instead of being driven somewhere? The Tabasco Pit sits 3.5 miles west of Doffing on Mine Safety and Health Administration records, and we come to the truck there or wherever else it is parked. Give us the location and the name of whoever controls the gate.
- Do you take farm trucks used on Hidalgo County cotton and cattle operations?Hidalgo County’s 2,045 farms, as USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts them, run on grain trucks, cattle haulers and flatbeds, and those are all trucks we collect. Start with a VIN and pictures of the bed and cab from the farm.
- The Texas title for my Doffing truck has disappeared, so what is the first step?A Doffing owner without a title should request a replacement from the Texas title office first, since the name on it must match whoever signs. Tell us once you have applied and we can arrange the collection in the meantime.
