Elgin’s motor carriers, counted
FMCSA’s carrier census shows 241 active motor carriers based in Elgin, and 211 of them are registered as intrastate only, against 30 that cross state lines. For most sellers here, that means the truck is a Texas-plated tractor or straight truck that has worked Central Texas roads, and the Texas title and current registration are the two papers to find before you call us.
Fifty-four of Elgin’s carriers in that FMCSA census move their own goods as private fleets, not loads for hire. If your truck belonged to a contractor, a feed business or a farm operation rather than a trucking company, tell us whose name is on the title; when it is a business name, have a letter or signature from someone able to sign for that business.
New registrations in the FMCSA census climbed from 19 Elgin carriers in 2024 to 27 in 2025. If you started hauling recently and the truck is still under a loan, have the lender’s name and the payoff letter ready, so the lien can be cleared at the same time the title moves.
Freight, heavy equipment and feed loads
In Elgin, FMCSA’s census has 131 carriers marking general freight on their registrations and 30 marking machinery or oversized objects. A day cab or a tractor that pulled flatbeds and lowboys around Bastrop and Travis counties fits what we buy; send the VIN, the odometer reading and a photo of each side of the cab.
Farm supplies and grain, feed and hay each appear on 24 Elgin carrier registrations in the FMCSA census. If yours is a hay hauler or a feed truck that spends its days on ranch roads, note where it is parked and whether the gate is locked, since collection often happens out on the property rather than in town.
How far and how old
Drivers attached to Elgin carriers split 242 working within 100 miles of base and 179 going farther, per FMCSA’s carrier census. The 56 carriers that reported annual mileage to FMCSA show a median of 50,000 miles a truck; write your truck’s own odometer figure on the first message so we start from the right number.
Elgin-based trucks checked at the roadside between August 2024 and August 2026 numbered 165 in FMCSA roadside inspection records; their middle model year was 2012, and 67 percent carried a model year at least ten years back. Whatever year yours is, the paperwork that helps most is the same: the title, the registration card and any service receipts you kept.
The three biggest fleets in FMCSA’s Elgin listing run 18, 11 and 9 power units. If you are selling more than one truck from a small fleet like those, send one list with every VIN on it, and we will plan one collection for the group where the trucks share a yard.
Gravel south-west, fuel to the west and south
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists Bastrop Plant, a sand and gravel operation 10 miles south-west of Elgin, and Webberville S&G about 10.7 miles in the same direction. Dump trucks and end-dump tractors that work those pits are trucks we purchase; if yours is still parked at a pit, give us the site contact so the pickup can be arranged with them.
Two Flint Hills Resources petroleum product terminals appear in Energy Information Administration listings near town: the Austin terminal 14.4 miles west and the Bastrop terminal 17 miles south. For a tank truck or a tractor that pulled fuel trailers between them, include any hazmat or tank inspection paperwork you have, alongside the title.
The Taylor yard and Elgin’s bridges
Up the road to the north, the Taylor rail yard sits 14.8 miles from Elgin on the North American Rail Network map kept by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Trucks that shuttled loads to and from that yard can be collected at a shop or lot near Taylor just as easily as in Elgin itself; give us the street address.
Of the 49 bridges around Elgin in the National Bridge Inventory, 2 carry load postings and none clears under 14 feet. Tell us the truck’s configuration and any trailer attached, and we will plan the route to your address around those two posted spans.
Elgin plants, contractors and cattle farms
The Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts recorded 3,832 jobs in Elgin in 2023, including 324 in manufacturing and 147 in construction. Box trucks and straight trucks from plant deliveries and job-site work are part of what we buy here; a photo of the body or bed, with the doors open, tells us what it is set up to carry.
Elgin’s area holds 85 construction businesses on the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns tally. If a crew truck, a dump or a water truck came off one of those jobs, the title name should match the business that signs, so check that before we talk.
USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 1,871 farms in Bastrop County, with cattle, horses and milk at the top of the list. Livestock trailers’ tractors, feed trucks and dairy haulers often sit on the farm itself, and we come out to the place where the truck is kept.
Loads for Camp Swift and NG Bergstrom
The Bureau of Transportation Statistics lists National Guard Camp Swift 8.5 miles south-east of Elgin and NG Bergstrom at the Austin airport 20.8 miles south-west. If your truck has run supply or construction loads to either installation and is parked near one, tell us whether a pass is needed to reach it.
Civilian trucks that serviced those sites are titled like any other in Texas. Have the title, the registration and a photo ID that matches the name on the title, and the rest can be handled where the truck stands.
The questions we get asked in Elgin
- My dump truck sits at the Webberville S&G pit; does it have to come into Elgin first?Webberville S&G is about 10.7 miles south-west of Elgin on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s list, and we collect from the pit. Name the person at the pit who can let a driver through, and when the pit is open.
- Most Elgin carriers only haul inside Texas. Does an intrastate truck sell the same way?Intrastate operators make up 211 of Elgin’s 241 active carriers in FMCSA’s census, and their trucks go through the same steps: a Texas title in the seller’s name, the registration and photos.
- My hay truck stays on a Bastrop County ranch outside Elgin; will you pick it up on the ranch?Bastrop County has 1,871 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, and we collect from the farm or ranch where the truck is kept. Send the ranch address and tell us who can open the gate.
