Palo Pinto County
Four sandstone rows, and the filing types disagree with them
Four rows attach to Gordon and all four work sandstone or dimension stone, but the type field and the commodity field do not line up across them. Gordon Stone Company is filed as dimension stone and carries a commodity of Dimension Stone NEC, with 12 employees. Premium Sandstone Quarry is filed under sand and gravel while its commodity reads crushed and broken sandstone, with 23. MI Solution Stone is the same shape with three, and Sky Ridge Stone is filed under sand and gravel while its commodity reads dimension sandstone, with three.
So three of the four sit under a sand and gravel type that describes none of them. Crushed sandstone is a quarried aggregate and dimension sandstone is cut building stone; neither is construction sand and gravel, and the two are not each other either. The type strings understate what is here.
We are flagging that rather than correcting it. The record is read-only, and the useful thing for a seller is not which field is right but that this is a stone district of four operations and 41 people, in a county carrying nine rows in all.
So there are two stone trades here, and one long road east
Those mismatched filings hide a real split, and the split is what puts different trucks on the road.
Crushed sandstone is a volume aggregate: tandem and tri-axle dumps, belly dumps, sold by the ton, loaded fast and tipped fast. Dimension sandstone is cut building stone: flatbeds and lowboys carrying block or strapped pallets, loaded by forklift or crane, never tipped at all, where the deck, the rub rails and the tie-down points wear instead of a hoist. Same county, same rock, two entirely different trucks.
The geography adds the other half. Dallas and Fort Worth are 60 to 80 miles from most of this group, so runs east are genuine highway distances rather than metro-fringe hops, and a truck doing them accumulates real mileage that means what it says. One thing we will not tell you is where the material goes: whether these operations serve the Barnett Shale beneath this area, ship to the Permian or feed metroplex construction was not established for any of them, and a duty cycle built on a guess about the destination would be worth nothing to you.
Texas weight law
One ceiling, and stone is not on the permit list
Both of those trades run under a single ceiling, and neither has relief written for it.
Texas sets gross weight at 80,000 lb, a single axle at 20,000 lb and a tandem at 34,000 lb — the plain federal figures, with no commodity variance of the kind Georgia and Kentucky grant.
What Texas grants instead is permits, each written for a named industry: ready-mixed concrete, fluid milk, timber, and super heavy single-trip. Aggregate, stone, sand and quarry products are on none of them, so crushed sandstone and cut block both take the general Chapter 623 route. The super heavy single-trip permit is the one that matters on the dimension side, where an oversized block on a lowboy is exactly the load it exists for.
The general permit adds ten per cent on the axle and five per cent on gross, takes a fifteen thousand dollar bond, and makes the holder responsible for actual damage to load-restricted roads and bridges. On a load-zoned road the permitted weight is ten per cent less than the maximum, so those two percentages run in opposite directions and must never be added together.
Tex. Transp. Code § 621.101; Chapter 623 permits. Information, not legal advice.
Texas paperwork
We need a title — unless it never had one
Beyond the weight rules, the paperwork is a single sentence.
Everything after that sentence is a fix rather than a category. A lost title has a counter replacement. Where none exists there is a bonded route. Both are ordinary and neither stops a sale.
Texas has no percentage threshold for salvage. The section brands a truck salvage where there is damage to, or a missing, major component part and the cost of repairs exceeds the actual cash value immediately before the damage — effectively one hundred per cent, the most seller-favourable figure on file, against seventy in Indiana and Arkansas and seventy-five in Alabama and Kentucky.
It is a two-part test rather than pure arithmetic: the section enumerates thirteen major component parts, from engine and transmission to frame, truck cab and passenger compartment door. The cargo box limb is qualified at ten thousand pounds or less, and whether a heavier commercial body counts was not established, so we do not guess at it. Truck cab is enumerated without qualification.
Emissions inspection does not reach you. Diesel vehicles are not required to be emissions-inspected in Texas, and this county is not on the programme list either.
Tex. Transp. Code § 501.091. Information, not legal advice, and only as current as the date the rule file was last verified.
What we buy here
Those rules land the same way on every body style, and so does the offer.
Flatbeds and stake beds off the cut stone, lowboys and heavy-haul tractors off the block. Tandem and tri-axle dump trucks and belly dumps off the crushed side, day cabs and road tractors, water trucks, rollbacks, box trucks, service bodies, and the crew pickups behind them.
We buy all of them. Gordon is small and the metro is a highway run away, so buying it remotely and arranging the tow is a normal path here; coming to you and driving it away or towing it are both open, and driving it to us stays open too. Gordon Stone Company, Premium Sandstone Quarry, MI Solution Stone and Sky Ridge Stone are the four rows on file at this town, out of nine across Palo Pinto County.
We buy complete trucks. If the engine, transmission, doors, rear ends, drive shafts, wheels or anything under the hood have been removed, we can’t buy it. Small things — a missing bumper — are fine.
Straight answers
The questions we get asked in Gordon
- Does it have to run?No. It does have to be complete — if the engine, transmission, doors, rear ends, drive shafts, wheels or anything under the hood have been removed, we can’t buy it. Rust is not a disqualifier.
- My flatbed hauled cut stone. Then the deck, the rub rails and the tie-down points are what we look at, not a hoist. A dimension stone truck out of somewhere like Sky Ridge Stone never tips, so the whole rear end has had an easier life than a dump body of the same age.
- Do you come out this far?We do. Buying it remotely and arranging the tow is open too, and driving it to us stays open if that suits you.
- The odometer is high.Expected on this side of the county. Dallas and Fort Worth are 60 to 80 miles off, so these are real highway runs and the mileage on a stone truck out of here means what it says — which is more useful to both of us than a low number nobody can interpret.
- Do I need an emissions test to sell it?No. Diesel vehicles are exempt from Texas emissions inspection, and Palo Pinto County is not on the programme list either way.
- What about the title? We need one unless the truck is old enough that it never had one. Lost titles have a counter replacement; where none exists there’s a bonded route.
Why people call
Those are the mechanics. The reasons behind a call are more personal than that.
Retiring. A medical that went the wrong way. A job that finished, or an outfit that has grown out of one truck and into another and needs the first one gone. Across four operations running 12, 23, three and three people, most of the equipment here belongs to somebody with a handful of trucks, and Premium Sandstone Quarry aside, none of these is a fleet.
Most of those aren’t happy reasons, and we don’t treat them like they are. Somebody wants a straight answer and the truck gone by the end of the week. That’s what we’re here for, in Gordon and across Palo Pinto County.
