Coils, beverages and general freight from Melissa
Of the 137 active carriers in FMCSA’s carrier census for Melissa, 101 list general freight, 24 list metal sheets, coils and rolls, and 20 each list beverages and machinery or large objects. A flatbed tractor that has strapped down coils or heavy equipment is as welcome as a dry van tractor from the general freight side. When you get in touch, say which kind of load the truck pulled and what trailer, if any, goes with it.
The same FMCSA census splits Melissa’s carriers into 73 interstate and 64 intrastate operations, and 30 of them run private fleets that move their own company’s goods. If your tractor belongs to one of those private fleets, the title is likely in the business name, so have the person who signs for the company on hand.
Short runs near Melissa and long runs well beyond it
Drivers working for Melissa carriers split 164 within a 100-mile radius and 263 beyond it, according to FMCSA’s census filings. A tractor kept on the longer runs may be parked at a terminal or a driver’s home rather than in town, so send us the address where it actually sits today.
Among the 42 Melissa carriers that reported both mileage and power units to FMCSA, the median works out to 59,408 miles a truck each year. Write down the odometer reading exactly as it shows on the dash and photograph it beside the VIN plate; those two numbers start every conversation about a truck.
FMCSA roadside inspection records from August 2024 to August 2026 covered 163 trucks tied to Melissa carriers, and the median model year among them was 2018. Pull the registration card and the cab card out of the visor before we arrive so the year and VIN can be read off paper as well as the plate.
Ten or more model years had passed for 37.4 percent of those Melissa trucks at the time FMCSA roadside inspection records logged them. Whatever year yours is, gather any service invoices or inspection sheets from the glovebox into one folder for the collection.
Building and farming
Construction work, gravel pits and Collin County farms
Construction holds 659 of the 2,725 jobs located in Melissa, a 24.2 percent share in the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts for 2023, and County Business Patterns from the Census Bureau records 32 construction establishments. Dump trucks, water trucks and equipment haulers from those contractors are trucks we collect, from a yard or a job site.
West of town, the Mine Safety and Health Administration lists B & B Sand & Gravel 24.6 miles away and Denton Sand Farm at 24.7 miles. A dump truck that has worked those pits can stay parked at the operation; just give us the gate contact and the hours someone is there to let us in.
Collin County had 2,330 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, with cattle, wheat and corn at the top of the list. Grain trucks and livestock haulers off those farms are often titled to a family member or the farm itself, so check whose name is on the title before you call.
Wylie to the south, Sherman to the north
Eighteen miles south, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics lists the Wylie intermodal ramp at 18.4 miles, and the North American Rail Network places the Wylie rail yard at 18.1 miles. A day cab that has shuttled containers off that ramp can be picked up at the drop lot or at your own driveway.
Heading north instead, the North American Rail Network shows the Sherman (DGNO) yard 24.5 miles from Melissa. Tractors that run between the two yards often sit in a shared lot, so tell us whose property the truck is on and who can unlock it.
Recently registered carriers and small fleets
Melissa added 14 carriers to FMCSA’s carrier census during 2024, then another 10 through 2025. If you started up in those years and are now selling the tractor, bring the title and your USDOT number so the paperwork lines up with the registration.
Fleet sizes in Melissa run from small to mid-sized: FMCSA’s census lists one carrier with 48 power units and 46 drivers, another with 35 power units and 28 drivers, and a third with 18 of each. A fleet manager letting several units go at once can send one list of VINs and parking addresses, and we will work through them together.
The questions we get asked in Melissa
- My dump truck is parked at a sand and gravel pit west of Melissa. Can it stay at the pit until pickup?Denton Sand Farm sits 24.7 miles west of Melissa on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s list, and B & B Sand & Gravel is 24.6 miles out; we come to the truck at either one. Tell us who runs the gate so the pickup is set with them.
- The truck is titled to my farm in Collin County, not to me. Who signs it over in that case? With 2,330 farms counted in Collin County by USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, farm-titled trucks come up often here. Whoever is named on the title, whether the farm or a relative, signs it over, so have that person available.
