Produce, meat and reefer tractors in Mercedes
Of the 188 active carriers that FMCSA’s carrier census places in Mercedes, 68 list fresh produce, 54 list refrigerated food and 54 list meat among the cargo they carry. If your tractor pulled a reefer between Valley packing sheds, tell us the trailer type it was paired with and whether the reefer unit goes with the sale or stays behind.
General freight is the most common listing, carried by 116 Mercedes carriers according to the same FMCSA census. For a dry-van tractor, the first things we ask for are the VIN, the odometer reading and clear photos of both sides of the cab, the frame rails and the fifth wheel.
Hidalgo County holds 2,045 farms growing mostly cotton and corn or raising cattle, according to USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture. A truck that has spent its seasons on farm roads around Mercedes may be parked at a field barn or a ranch gate today; send us that location and the name of whoever holds the key.
Local hauling, private fleets and Valley routes
FMCSA’s carrier census records 147 Mercedes carriers as intrastate only, against 41 that run interstate, and 37 operate as private fleets hauling their own goods. A Texas-only tractor still needs a clear title in the seller’s name, so check that the name on it matches the name on your registration before you call.
Drivers working for Mercedes carriers split into 269 who stay within 100 miles and 186 who run beyond it, per the FMCSA census. Whichever group your driver belonged to, we arrange collection at the yard or curb where the truck is parked now, whether that is in Mercedes, Weslaco or out toward Harlingen.
A Mercedes tractor logs a median 45,138 miles a year across the 50 local carriers whose mileage appears in FMCSA’s carrier census. Write down the current odometer figure and keep the most recent service invoices together; those two items answer most of the questions we ask about a tractor.
Rio Valley ramp, Harlingen yard and the fuel racks
The Bureau of Transportation Statistics lists the Rio Valley intermodal ramp at Donna 11.2 miles west of Mercedes. A day cab that drayed containers on and off that ramp can be collected where it sits; give us the street address and any gate code for the lot.
Harlingen’s rail yard lies 13.2 miles east of town on the North American Rail Network, and the Energy Information Administration places the Harlingen petroleum product terminal 18.6 miles east and Key Petrol’s terminal 19.4 miles out. If your truck hauled fuel from those racks, keep its tank inspection certificates and hazmat paperwork with the title.
Titan Fuel, a liquid bulk terminal, is 19.7 miles east of Mercedes in Bureau of Transportation Statistics records. Tank tractors from that corridor are trucks we buy, and a photo of the data plate on the tank or the trailer coupling helps us see the setup it ran.
Quarry, gravel and construction trucks
Crushed stone comes out of La Havana Pit 18.6 miles north-west of Mercedes, and sand and gravel out of Texan Pit 24.1 miles west, in Mine Safety and Health Administration listings. A dump truck or end-dump tractor that hauled from either pit can stay parked on site while we arrange pickup with the operator.
Builders held 364 Mercedes jobs in 2023, 7 percent of the town’s 5,237, a split the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts record. County Business Patterns from the Census Bureau records 16 construction establishments in town; if your truck belongs to one of them, have the business title and a letter showing who can sign for the company ready.
Wholesale trade held 222 jobs in Mercedes in 2023, 4.2 percent of the local total, in that same LEHD release from the Census Bureau. Box trucks and straight trucks from wholesale delivery work fit what we buy, and photos of the box interior and the liftgate help us understand the body.
Hidalgo County tractors at inspection
Across 201 trucks inspected at the roadside between August 2024 and August 2026, FMCSA roadside inspection records give a median model year of 2014, with 65.7 percent at least ten years old. Whatever year yours is, the registration card and the title together tell us the model year and VIN without guesswork.
The biggest Mercedes fleet in FMCSA’s carrier census runs 41 power units with 72 drivers, and the next two run 16 and 13. If you are selling several units from one operation, list each VIN on one sheet with where each truck is parked, and we can plan the pickups as a group.
New carriers keep registering in town: FMCSA’s census shows 19 Mercedes carriers added in 2025 and 13 in 2024. An owner-operator closing out a young authority can sell the tractor the same way an established fleet does, with the title and a photo ID in the owner’s name.
Bridges, titles and getting ready to sell
Just one of the 32 Mercedes bridges in the National Bridge Inventory carries a posted weight limit, and none clears less than 14 feet. Tell us if the truck sits behind that posted bridge or on a narrow farm road so we send equipment that can reach it.
If the title has gone missing, Texas’s title agency issues a certified copy to the owner of record, and that copy is what we need at pickup. Start that request before you contact us, and keep the registration receipt nearby in case it asks for the plate or VIN.
The questions we get asked in Mercedes
- Will you pick up a reefer rig sitting at a Mercedes produce shed?Fresh produce is listed by 68 Mercedes carriers in FMCSA’s carrier census, so shed lots are a usual place for us to collect. Give us the shed address and a contact who can open the yard, and the truck stays put until pickup.
- Is a dump truck from La Havana Pit or Texan Pit something you take?La Havana Pit sits 18.6 miles north-west of town and Texan Pit 24.1 miles west, per the Mine Safety and Health Administration, and dump trucks from both are ones we buy. Send the VIN, title details and photos of the bed and frame.
- The title for my Valley tractor has disappeared; who reissues it?Mercedes owners request a certified copy from Texas’s title agency, the office that keeps the owner-of-record file. Once you have it in hand, or the request is underway, contact us with the VIN and we will go from there.
- Can you collect a tanker that ran fuel out of the Harlingen terminals? The Energy Information Administration places the Harlingen petroleum product terminal 18.6 miles east of Mercedes, and tank tractors from that run are trucks we buy. Keep the tank inspection certificates with the title and tell us where the unit is parked.
