Pits near the tracks
Crushed stone on the roads toward Abilene
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists Eagle Crusher #1, a crushed-stone quarry, about 8.2 miles east of Merkel, and the Abilene Black Lease Quarry roughly 19.1 miles to the south-east. Dump trucks and end-dump tractors that cycle between those pits and job sites in the county are the kind of equipment we collect. If yours is parked at a quarry gate rather than at home, tell us which pit and who holds the key.
Westward, the Mine Safety and Health Administration also records two industrial-mineral sites under the Sweetwater Quarry name, one near 19 miles out and the other close to 20.7 miles. A Merkel owner whose tractor spends the week on that side of town can sell it where it sits; send the yard address, a photo of the VIN plate and a shot of the odometer so we know which truck we are coming for.
Racks, rails, runway
Terminals, the rail yard and Dyess on the Abilene side
According to the Energy Information Administration, a petroleum product terminal listed as Abilene TX lies about 9.1 miles east, with a second Abilene terminal near 15.4 miles. Tank trucks and fuel tractors that load at those racks are trucks we purchase; keep any loading-rack access cards or tank test certificates you still hold together with the title.
The North American Rail Network, kept by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, shows the Abilene rail yard around 16.5 miles east, while Dyess Air Force Base appears in Bureau of Transportation Statistics listings about 10.5 miles in the same direction. A flatbed or day cab that shuttles between those points and Merkel can be picked up on base-side lots or near the yard, provided you give us a contact who can let us onto the property.
Grain, hay and machinery on Merkel’s carrier filings
Only 10 of Merkel’s 56 active motor carriers hold interstate operations on FMCSA’s carrier census, leaving 46 that keep their loads within Texas. If your authority is Texas-only, your truck will most likely be somewhere in the county when we arrange collection, and the Texas registration papers are the ones to have on hand.
Cargo declarations in that federal census put general freight on 23 carrier filings, machinery and large objects on 19, and farm supplies alongside grain, feed and hay on 17 each. Lowboys, flatbeds, livestock and hopper rigs all fit that mix; tell us which body or trailer is attached, since a truck sold with its trailer needs both sets of paperwork.
Of those Merkel carriers, 28 operate as private fleets hauling their own goods, according to FMCSA. A ranch, contractor or farm supply business selling one of its own trucks should have the company’s name on the title match the name on the bill of sale.
Short radius work and a 2018 median model year
Federal carrier census filings show 246 Merkel-based drivers working inside a hundred-mile radius and 51 who go farther; most drivers here stay near home. Among the 14 carriers that reported mileage to FMCSA, the median came to 20,117 miles per truck, and the odometer reading is one of the first figures we ask for.
Across 95 Merkel-registered trucks stopped for roadside checks from October 2024 to August 2026, FMCSA roadside inspection records give a 2018 median model year, and 33.7 percent were built ten or more model years earlier. Whatever year yours is, have the registration, the most recent annual inspection report and any service records together before we talk.
The three biggest fleets on the federal census here run 120, 27 and 21 power units. If you are retiring several units from a fleet that size, send us a list of VINs and where each truck is parked, and we will plan the collection unit by unit.
Oilfield, wholesale and construction jobs around Merkel
Mining, quarrying and oil and gas extraction account for 168 of the 926 jobs located in Merkel in 2023, an 18.1 percent share by the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts. Vacuum trucks, water haulers and winch tractors that served that work belong on the list of what we buy; any lease or site access paperwork tells us where the truck has been.
Wholesale trade holds 91 of those Merkel jobs, or 9.8 percent, on the same LEHD figures, and County Business Patterns from the Census Bureau records 18 construction establishments in the area. Box trucks, stake beds and dump trucks from those businesses can be sold from the shop yard; photos of all four sides plus the cab interior get the conversation started.
Taylor County spreads
Cattle, wheat and horses on the farms around town
Around Merkel, USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 1,222 farms in Taylor County, with cattle, wheat and horses ranked as the top products. Cattle pots, grain trucks and bobtails with hay beds are trucks that farm work around here keeps on the road, and we come out to the ranch to collect them.
Farm trucks often sit in a barn or pasture between seasons, which is fine with us. Give clear directions to the gate, say whether the ground is passable for a tow rig, and have the title signed by whoever’s name is on it, whether that is you, a family member or the ranch.
Oak Street in Abilene for a missing Merkel title
The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles handles certified copies of titles through county tax assessor-collector offices, and for Merkel that is the Taylor County Tax Office at 400 Oak Street, Ste 105, Taylor County Plaza, Abilene, 79602, about 16.3 miles from town. If the title is missing, start the copy request there before you list the truck with us.
A truck that still carries a lien needs a release from the lender before that county tax office can issue a clean title, so ask the lender for it early. Bring your driver’s license and the VIN to the Taylor County Plaza office, and keep the receipt for the copy request so we can see it is on the way.
The questions we get asked in Merkel
- Do you buy farm and livestock trucks from ranches around Merkel?Taylor County’s 1,222 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture lean on cattle and wheat, and the cattle pots, grain trucks and hay haulers that serve them are trucks we buy and pick up from the ranch.
- My Merkel authority covers Texas hauling only; does that change how the sale works?Forty-six of the 56 active carriers in Merkel on FMCSA’s carrier census are intrastate, so a Texas-only truck is the usual case here; have the Texas title and registration ready and we handle the rest.
