Four pits and plants on the San Jac and Dolen side of Shepherd
Just 4.5 miles east of town, the San Jac Plant is a sand and gravel operation on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s list. A dump truck or end-dump tractor that runs loads out of that pit can be collected right where it parks between shifts, so tell us the yard or gate it sits behind.
Heading south, the Mine Safety and Health Administration records the ACE Portable Plant, a mineral processing site, at 8.3 miles, and Texas Concrete Sand and Gravel, Inc. at 9.7 miles to the south-west. If your truck splits its time between those two sites, give us both addresses and the one where it will be on the day you want it gone.
Farther out on the same south-west line, the Dolen Plant is an industrial-mineral mine 11.5 miles away according to the Mine Safety and Health Administration. Photos of the bed, the hoist and the cab, plus the VIN, let us talk about a quarry truck from that side of town without a site visit first.
Freight, timber, coil
Eighty-one carriers and what they carry around Shepherd
FMCSA’s carrier census shows 81 active carriers based in and around Shepherd, and 47 of them list general freight. Box trucks, day cabs and sleepers pulling vans all fit that description, and any of them can be sold to us with the title in hand and the registration current or recently lapsed.
Timber shows up next: 22 of those carriers declare logs, poles, beams and lumber on FMCSA’s carrier census, while 16 list machinery and large objects and 13 list metal sheets, coils and rolls. A log truck, a lowboy tractor or a flatbed rig that carried coil is the kind of equipment we collect here, so tell us what trailer or body it pulled.
Private fleets account for 18 of the Shepherd-area carriers on FMCSA’s census, meaning businesses that haul their own goods. If your company owns a truck as part of its own operation, have the person who signs for the business ready with the title, since that is the name we deal with at pickup.
Texas plates, mostly
Mostly in-state work, with a share crossing the line
According to FMCSA’s carrier census, 67 of the area’s carriers run intrastate only and 14 are authorised for interstate work. A truck plated only for Texas hauling is no obstacle for us; we pick it up in Shepherd or wherever in the state it happens to be parked.
Drivers working within a hundred-mile radius number 64 on FMCSA’s census, against 44 who go beyond it. Where your truck ends its week matters more than where it is registered, so give us the address of the lot, the home driveway or the jobsite where it will be waiting.
Among 19 carriers reporting it, FMCSA’s carrier census puts the median annual distance per truck at 30,000 miles. Have the odometer reading and the VIN ready when you get in touch; those two figures start every conversation we have about a truck.
Four and five tractors
Owner-operators and fleets of a handful of tractors
The biggest operations based near Shepherd are small: on FMCSA’s carrier census the top fleet runs 5 power units with 3 drivers, and the next two run 4 units each. Selling one truck out of a four- or five-unit outfit is a routine sale for us, and we can handle more than one if you are cutting back.
New registrations have picked up recently, with 11 carriers added in 2025 compared with 4 in 2024 on FMCSA’s census. Whether your authority is brand new or years old, what we need is the same: the title in the seller’s name, a photo ID, and the truck’s location.
Build years on Shepherd trucks pulled over for inspection, 2024 to 2026
Shepherd’s 45 trucks checked at the roadside from September 2024 to August 2026 have a median build year of 2011, going by FMCSA roadside inspection records. Older model years are welcome here, and a copy of the most recent inspection report is a useful thing to send along with photos.
Roughly seven in ten of those Shepherd trucks, 71 percent, carried a model year a decade or more back, again per FMCSA roadside inspection records. Service records and the annual inspection sticker give us the truck’s history in your own words, so gather whatever you have kept in the cab or the shop office.
Shepherd sellers and the Coldspring tax office counter
The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles issues titles through county tax assessor-collector offices, and for Shepherd that is the San Jacinto County Tax Office at 111 State Hwy 150, Rm C5, Coldspring, 77331, about 10.1 miles from town. If the title is missing, that office is where you request a certified copy before the sale.
Bring photo ID and the VIN to the Coldspring counter, and if a lender is still listed on the title, a lien release from that lender. Once the replacement is in your hands, send us a photo of it with the truck’s details and we can arrange collection.
Construction yards, cattle ranches and local employers
County Business Patterns from the Census Bureau records 11 construction establishments in the area, and Shepherd’s employers held 833 positions in 2023 on the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts. A contractor’s dump truck or water truck parked at a yard in town can be picked up there with the title and keys.
Out in the countryside, San Jacinto County had 588 farms when USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture was taken, with cattle, horses and goats at the top of the list. Ranch trucks and stock-trailer tractors sitting on rural property are collected where they stand; give us gate directions and someone to meet the driver.
The questions we get asked in Shepherd
- My dump truck hauls out of the San Jac Plant east of Shepherd. Does the truck have to leave the San Jac Plant before you take it?The San Jac Plant is a sand and gravel operation 4.5 miles east of town on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s list, and we can collect the truck at that site or wherever else it parks. Name the pit foreman or whoever holds the San Jac gate key, and the driver will meet them there.
- The title for my Shepherd log truck is lost; where in San Jacinto County do I apply for a copy? The San Jacinto County Tax Office in Coldspring, about 10.1 miles away at 111 State Hwy 150, Rm C5, handles titles for the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Request the certified copy there, then send us a photo of it.
- I only haul logs inside Texas. Will you still take my truck?Twenty-two carriers in the Shepherd area list logs, poles, beams and lumber on FMCSA’s carrier census, and 67 run intrastate only, so a Texas-only log truck is a familiar sale here. Send the VIN, a few photos of the truck and the trailer it pulls, and the Shepherd-area spot where it sits.
