Across the causeway
Fuel terminals at Port Isabel
Across the bay to the south-west, the Energy Information Administration lists a petroleum product terminal at Port Isabel 4.7 miles from the island. A tractor that pulls fuel loads from there to the island’s stations and marinas can be collected on either side of the causeway; tell us which side it is parked on when you first get in touch.
Half a mile further along the same shore, the Pilot liquid bulk terminal appears in the Bureau of Transportation Statistics listing at 5.1 miles south-west. For a tank truck or a tractor that has worked out of that site, have the registration, the cab card and any tank test paperwork together, and send photos of the tank, the valves and the cab so we see the whole rig.
Brownsville ship channel
Bulk terminals and the Brownsville port
Closer to Brownsville, the Energy Information Administration places a second petroleum product terminal 15.9 miles south-west of South Padre Island, and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics lists ABC Gulf Coast Terminal, a liquid bulk site, at 16.5 miles. Sellers whose trucks run between these sites and the island usually keep them on the mainland; give us the yard address and a name for whoever holds the gate key.
Due west, the port of Brownsville is 16.7 miles away according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. A day cab or sleeper that hauls cargo off those docks does not need to come back across the causeway for us to buy it. Send the VIN, the odometer reading and a few clear pictures of the frame and fifth wheel, and the pickup is planned around the port lot.
Drayage between the yards and the ship channel
The North American Rail Network, kept by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, shows the Brownsville Palo Alto rail yard 18.6 miles south-west and the Port of Brownsville yard 18.8 miles out. Drayage tractors that shuttle between those yards and the docks are welcome; list the trailers or chassis the tractor has pulled so we know its setup before we arrive.
An intermodal ramp named simply Terminal sits 18.9 miles south-west on the Bureau of Transportation Statistics map. If the tractor that worked that ramp is parked there now, tell us whose property it stands on so collection can be cleared with the owner of the lot.
Island employment
A resort town with a small hauling trade
South Padre Island counted 4,556 jobs in 2023 under the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts, of which 59, or 1.3 percent, sat in transportation and warehousing. If your truck is one owned and driven by you alone, have the title in your name and a photo ID ready, and the sale is handled with you directly.
County Business Patterns from the Census Bureau records 7 construction establishments on the island. Dump trucks, flatbeds and service bodies that build and maintain the hotels and condos along the beach are trucks we purchase; add a short note on the body type and what the truck carried.
Farm trucks from the Rio Grande Valley side
West of the island, across the Laguna Madre, lie 1,248 farms in Cameron County, as USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture reports, with cotton, sorghum and corn as the leading crops. Grain trucks and farm tractors that haul those harvests often sit in a barn or field between seasons, and we collect them where they are parked.
For a farm truck registered to a family operation, the plates and the title may carry different names. Send us both names along with the VIN, and we will tell you what paperwork has to match before the truck changes hands.
Replacing a title from the Brownsville tax office
Titles in Texas are issued by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, and its county tax assessor-collector offices handle copies. For island owners, the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles lists the Cameron County Tax Office at 835 East Levee, Brownsville, 78520, about 25.4 miles from South Padre Island.
Before driving to Brownsville, check the glovebox and any lender letters for the title number. Bring photo ID and the VIN to the tax office counter, and if a lender still shows on the title, bring their release letter along too.
The questions we get asked in South Padre Island
- My tanker sits beside the Port Isabel fuel terminal on the mainland, so must it cross onto the island first? The Port Isabel petroleum product terminal is 4.7 miles south-west of the island on Energy Information Administration records, and we collect from the lot beside it. Let us know which company runs that lot so access across its fence is sorted before the truck is loaded.
- Where do I get a copy of a lost Texas title near South Padre Island? The Cameron County Tax Office at 835 East Levee in Brownsville, 25.4 miles from the island, is the county tax assessor-collector office the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles lists for this county. Carry your driver’s licence and the truck’s VIN when you go to the Levee Street counter.
- My drayage tractor shuttles boxes off the Brownsville rail yards; will you pick it up at the railhead?Brownsville Palo Alto and the Port of Brownsville yard lie 18.6 and 18.8 miles south-west on the North American Rail Network, and a tractor parked near either is one we can pick up. Pass along the railhead lot where it stands plus the tractor’s VIN.
