Fauquier County

A diabase plant two miles out, and the state has approved it twice

The working site here sits 2.13 miles from the Bealeton centroid, which is close enough that the town and the plant are the same working day. MSHA’s Mine Data Retrieval System records 17 employees at the Bealeton Plant.

It is on VDOT’s Materials Approved List as a Luck Stone source, quarry code 05_7052_Q, with coarse aggregate approved in 2019 and fine aggregate approved in 2017 — two separate approvals, which is how that register works — and the geology recorded as diabase.

Diabase is the hard trap rock, and it is dense. That matters more than the tonnage on the ticket, because a dense commodity reaches its axle limits with the body well short of full.

One detail about the register is worth stating plainly: it spells this town Bealton, without the middle e. We joined the node to that entry on the operator matching and the place agreeing, not on the spelling, and the list carries no coordinates to check against.

And the roads out of it are the open ones

That density question is usually where a page like this turns grim, and here it does not. Within ten miles of the plant the FHWA National Bridge Inventory 2025 file for Virginia records 84 structures. Three are coded posted for load on item 41 and two are coded below legal loads on item 70, the nearest 2.80 miles out.

We use the item 70 count rather than the item 41 one, because across Virginia those two codes agree on only 68% of posted structures and item 41 overstates the restriction by about a half.

The lowest crossing at or above an empty tandem’s tare is 27.2 tonnes here — about 30.0 US tons. Over the 11.0-tonne tare of an empty tandem dump that admits roughly 16.2 tonnes of stone, against the twenty-five a legal 80,000 lb load carries.

So the binding crossing near Bealeton takes about two thirds of a full load rather than a tenth of one. Two restricted structures in eighty-four is an open network by the standards of this work, and a truck that has run out of here has probably not spent its life crabbing round postings. Read it as an upper bound even so: it is a minimum inside ten miles, and at 64.1% of the sites measured here a tighter crossing turns up between ten miles and twenty.

Virginia weight law

Those open roads still meet the same tandem limit

Those crossings are generous; the statute over them is not, and on diabase the statute binds first. Va. Code § 46.2-1122 puts a single axle at 20,000 lb and gross at 80,000 lb, § 46.2-1127 puts a tandem at 34,000 lb, and Virginia’s interstate limits are identical to its highway limits, so there is no interstate inversion here. Section 46.2-1126 sets gross by the distance between first and last axle, rounding any fraction of a foot up.

On dense rock the tandem is the limb that decides the load. The body is far from full when the axles are done, which is why the 34,000 lb figure and not the 80,000 lb one is the number a stone hauler works to.

Virginia’s commodity permit at § 46.2-1143 reaches 110,000 lb on six axles for gravel, sand, asphalt and crushed stone — within fifty miles, never on an interstate, and only in counties levying a severance tax. There is no statutory list of those counties, and whether Fauquier County levies one was not established. We are not closing that by assuming; one call to the commissioner of the revenue answers it.

Ordinary limits at Va. Code § 46.2-1122, the tandem at § 46.2-1127, the spacing table at § 46.2-1126 and the commodity permit at § 46.2-1143. Whether Fauquier County levies the gating tax was NOT established. Information, not legal advice.

Northern Virginia

And this county sits at the edge of the emissions programme

Beyond weight there is one regional rule worth knowing at this end of the state. Virginia’s emissions programme reaches ten Northern Virginia jurisdictions, and within them it applies to diesels only under 8,500 lb.

That threshold is the useful part: a commercial truck is over it, so the programme is not what stands between you and a sale. A diesel pickup or a light service van might be under it.

The IRP threshold is the other one at this weight — apportioned registration starts at 26,000 lb, which most work trucks in this county clear and a service body does not.

Virginia paperwork

Beyond that, the base is smaller than the percentage suggests

Beyond the registration rules the paperwork is one sentence: we need a title, unless the truck is old enough that it never had one. A lost title has a counter replacement; where none exists there is a bonded route. Neither one stops a sale.

The Virginia particular worth knowing is the base its branding test measures against. Under § 46.2-1600 a late model vehicle is salvage where estimated repair would exceed its actual cash value less its current salvage value. Every other state on file compares against the whole pre-damage figure.

A smaller base makes the test easier to trip rather than harder, which is the opposite of what comparing raw percentages would suggest. Virginia also excludes the cost of repairing the engine, transmission or drive axle from its rebuilt test — on a work truck, often exactly where the biggest repairs are.

Va. Code § 46.2-1600. Information, not legal advice, and only as current as the day it was read.

What we buy here

Those rules apply to whatever you drive, and the offer does not sort by type. Dump trucks and aggregate haulers off the Luck Stone diabase, 2.13 miles out. Day cabs and road tractors on the runs down through Fauquier County. Flatbeds, box trucks, straight trucks and rollbacks out of the trades, plus service bodies and the pickups that go with a crew.

Whatever you drive, the offer doesn’t change. We buy all of them.

We come to you and drive it away, we come to you and tow it, or we buy it remotely and arrange the tow with nobody visiting at all. You are welcome to bring it to us instead.

We buy complete trucks. If the engine, transmission, doors, rear ends, drive shafts, wheels or anything under the hood have been removed, we can’t buy it. Small things — a missing bumper — are fine.

Straight answers

The questions we get asked in Bealeton

  • Does it have to run?No. It does have to be complete — if the engine, transmission, doors, rear ends, drive shafts, wheels or anything under the hood have been removed, we can’t buy it. Rust is not a disqualifier.
  • It hauled diabase its whole life. Then it worked to the 34,000 lb tandem rather than to the gross, and it has the hours to show for it. That is the normal history on a Luck Stone truck here and it does not change whether we buy it.
  • How am I paid?Cash or electronic payment. That is the whole list.
  • Do you come out past the town?Yes. Fauquier County either side, and out to the plant 2.13 miles off. Distance has never stopped a sale.
  • What about the title? We need one unless the truck is old enough that it never had one. A lost title has a counter replacement; where none exists there is a bonded route.

Why people call

None of those questions is why the phone rings. Retiring. A medical that went the wrong way. A hauling contract that finished. A tri-axle standing in a yard 2.13 miles from the Luck Stone gate, with insurance going out on 80,000 lb of truck that isn’t turning a wheel.

Most of those aren’t happy reasons, and we don’t treat them like they are. Somebody wants a straight answer and the truck gone by the end of the week. That’s what we’re here for.

Virginia weight and title rules read from the Code of Virginia in August 2026 — verify with Virginia DMV and VDOT before acting on them. Ordinary limits at Va. Code § 46.2-1122, the tandem at § 46.2-1127, the spacing table at § 46.2-1126, the commodity permit at § 46.2-1143 and branding at § 46.2-1600. Whether Fauquier County levies the severance tax that gates § 46.2-1143 was NOT established.
