Island haulers
Three- and four-truck outfits on Chincoteague
Of the 15 active operations FMCSA’s carrier census lists for Chincoteague, 11 run as private fleets, hauling their own goods rather than freight for hire. If your truck belongs to a business like that, the person who signs the title may be the company rather than you, so check whose name is printed on it before you call.
The three biggest outfits on the island are small: FMCSA’s carrier census shows two with 4 power units and 4 drivers each, and one with 3 of each. Give us the phone number of the regular operator of the truck you are selling, and tell us where it is parked at night.
Selling a single unit out of a three- or four-truck operation is straightforward. Send the VIN, a clear photo of each side of the cab, and the registration card, and say which of your trucks it is if you run several of the same make.
Box freight, lumber and Accomack farm hauls
General freight is the cargo 11 of Chincoteague’s carriers report to FMCSA’s carrier census, which puts box trucks, straight trucks and day cabs at the centre of what works off the island. For a straight truck, photograph the body and the lift gate along with the cab, and note the body length when you write to us.
Logs, poles, beams and lumber are listed by 3 local carriers in FMCSA’s carrier census. A log truck or flatbed that has worked the timber run is one we will look at; tell us whether the loader or bunks come with it, so we know exactly what is being sold.
Accomack County has 254 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, with corn, soybeans and wheat as the leading crops, and one Chincoteague carrier in FMCSA’s census lists farm supplies as cargo. A grain truck or farm-supply hauler parked on a field lane is fine where it is; give us directions that a driver unfamiliar with the farm can follow.
Short runs and longer hauls from the island
Drivers working within 100 miles of base number 22 across Chincoteague carriers, against 12 who range farther, per FMCSA’s carrier census. A truck on local work tends to end its day back near home, so the pickup address is often a driveway or a shop lot on the island itself.
The split between interstate and in-state authority is close here: FMCSA’s carrier census lists 8 operations running across state lines and 7 staying inside Virginia. If your truck carried interstate authority, have the USDOT number handy when you contact us, along with the registration card.
For the 5 local carriers reporting it, the median distance per truck each year is 17,500 miles, according to FMCSA’s carrier census. Read the odometer and include that figure with your photos so the record you send is complete.
Wallops Island and the mainland road
About 7.7 miles south-west of town, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics places the Wallops Island site of Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story. If your truck is kept at a yard near the base gate, confirm before pickup whether a visitor needs clearance to reach it, and let us know who will meet the driver.
Chincoteague held 1,064 jobs in 2023 in the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts, while County Business Patterns shows 16 construction establishments working the island and the mainland side. Dump trucks and equipment haulers from local building work belong on the list of what we collect; tell us whether the truck sits at a job site or at the contractor’s yard.
Title on the island
Before a Chincoteague truck leaves the island with us, its title has to be in hand. If yours is missing, request a replacement from the state’s title agency before we schedule collection, and tell us at first contact that a duplicate is on the way.
Keep the registration, any service log and the keys together in the cab. If the truck was titled to a private fleet that has since closed, the person with authority to sign for that business should be the one we deal with.
The questions we get asked in Chincoteague
- I run one of the small private fleets in town. Can one of my island trucks go while the others stay working?Eleven of Chincoteague’s 15 operations are private fleets in FMCSA’s carrier census, and selling one unit out of a fleet that size is routine. Send the VIN and title for the truck you are selling and nothing else changes for your other trucks.
