Buckingham County

One company, one mineral, since 1945

Most towns this size have a bit of everything. Dillwyn has one thing, and it has had it for eighty years.

Kyanite Mining Corporation has run surface mines and processing in central Virginia since 1945, with two active mining locations — Willis Mountain and East Ridge — and reports annual capacity of about 150,000 tons of commercial grade kyanite concentrates and 30,000 tons of calcined kyanite. It describes itself as the oldest and largest producer of industrial grade kyanite and calcined kyanite in the world; that is the company’s own description and we are passing it on as one rather than as a measurement.

Virginia’s permit file carries it plainly: permits 05644AB and 05707AB to Kyanite Mining Corporation, mine name Willis Mt Mining Com, commodity kyanite, Buckingham County, located 1.5 miles west of St Rt 15 on Public Road No. 652.

Kyanite is a refractory mineral. Calcined kyanite is mullite. Both go to refractory, foundry and ceramic manufacturers — but where those customers are was never established, so we are not going to tell you what the outbound lanes look like.

Three sites inside six miles, and the nearest town is twelve away

Those three rows — the two mines and the processing site — lie within 6.3 miles of each other. The nearest town of any size is Farmville, 12.3 miles off. Charlottesville is 38.3.

That geometry produces a particular kind of truck job, and it is not the one people assume. Short internal shuttles between pit and plant, repeated all day, plus whatever goes out. Short repeated work is hard on brakes, clutches, tyres and frames while the odometer barely moves, so a modest reading here can sit on top of a hard decade.

It also means there is nobody else down the road. In a county with one industrial employer, the second-hand market for a specialised truck is not local, which is exactly the situation where getting it collected matters more than getting somebody to look at it.

Mine site rules

The rule that follows the material, not the site

Working a mineral brings one rule that travels with the dust rather than with the address. The mine safety respirable crystalline silica rule sets a permissible exposure limit of 50 micrograms per cubic metre, with an action level of 25, and its compliance date for metal and nonmetal operations was 8 April 2026 — which has passed.

That is stated as a property of working stone and nothing more. No exposure was measured at Willis Mountain, at East Ridge or at the Dillwyn plant, and we are not claiming any, in either direction.

We raise it because it is the sort of thing a seller gets asked about by the next buyer and has no reason to have thought about. If your cab has been fitted with anything on that account, it is a feature and not a liability, and it belongs in the description.

Virginia weight law

The limits, and a road figure we do not have

Those loads run under the ordinary state numbers. Va. Code § 46.2-1122 puts a single axle at 20,000 lb and gross at 80,000 lb, § 46.2-1127 puts a tandem at 34,000 lb, and the interstate limits match the highway ones. Section 46.2-1126 then sets gross by the distance between the first and last axle, rounding any fraction of a foot up, so it takes six axles across fifty-one feet to reach the full 80,000.

Here is the thing this page cannot give you, and other pages in this state can. For crushed-stone operations we have bridge measurements — how many structures within ten miles, how many below legal loads, how close the nearest one is. Those measurements were not made for these three rows. So we have no local road figure for Dillwyn and we are not going to borrow a neighbouring county’s.

The five per cent commodity permit at § 46.2-1129 is settled and it does not help here: it is written for Virginia-grown farm and forest products moved to first processing, and kyanite is a mineral.

Gross and single axle at Va. Code § 46.2-1122, the tandem at § 46.2-1127, the spacing table at § 46.2-1126 and the commodity permit at § 46.2-1129. Information, not legal advice.

Virginia paperwork

The truck that never had a title

That gap is a research one. This next one is a real situation and it comes up more in a place with eighty years of equipment in it than anywhere else we write about.

The rule is: we need a title, unless the truck is old enough that it never had one. That second clause is not a technicality. Plenty of working equipment predates titling, or was bought and sold on a bill of sale for forty years because nobody ever needed anything else, and its owner has quietly assumed for a decade that it cannot be sold. It can.

Past that there are two fixes and both are ordinary. A lost title has a counter replacement — you go and get another one. Where none exists at all there is a bonded route. Neither is exotic, neither takes an argument, and neither one stops a sale. If you have a truck sitting because of paperwork, that is the first thing to tell us rather than the last.

Titling and branding at Va. Code § 46.2-1600 and the Virginia DMV title process. Information, not legal advice, and only as current as the day it was read.

What we buy here

All of it, and the collection question matters more than the type does. Dump trucks and aggregate haulers off the mineral work. Day cabs and road tractors on whatever goes out. Farm trucks and grain hauls off Buckingham County ground. Flatbeds, box trucks, straight trucks, service bodies and the pickups that go with a crew.

Whatever you drive, the offer doesn’t change. We buy all of them.

Start from the far end on collection, because that is the realistic one here. We can buy it remotely and arrange the tow with nobody coming out at all, and 12.3 miles from Farmville and 38.3 from Charlottesville, that is usually how it goes. If you would rather we came, we come to you and drive it away or come to you and tow it. And you are welcome to bring it to us.

We buy complete trucks. If the engine, transmission, doors, rear ends, drive shafts, wheels or anything under the hood have been removed, we can’t buy it. Small things — a missing bumper — are fine.

Straight answers

The questions we get asked in Dillwyn

  • Does it have to run?No. It does have to be complete — if the engine, transmission, doors, rear ends, drive shafts, wheels or anything under the hood have been removed, we can’t buy it. Rust is not a disqualifier.
  • Will you actually come out this far?We will. But we do not need to — plenty of trucks in Buckingham County we buy remotely and have towed, and 12.3 miles from Farmville that is the ordinary route rather than the fallback.
  • There is no title and there never was. Then say so straight away. If it is old enough never to have had one, that is the rule rather than an exception, and where a title should exist and doesn’t there is a bonded route.
  • How am I paid?Cash or electronic payment. That is the whole list.
  • It ran mineral loads for years. Then tell us what and for how long. Frames and bodies carry that history. It does not change whether we buy it.

Why people call

Both of the last two usually turn up inside a bigger story. Retiring, after a working life at one company. A medical that went the wrong way. A contract that finished. A truck standing in a yard 6.3 miles from the Willis Mountain workings, unmoved for two years, with insurance going out on something that isn’t turning a wheel.

Most of those aren’t happy reasons, and we don’t treat them like they are. Somebody wants a straight answer and the truck gone by the end of the week. That’s what we’re here for.

Virginia weight and title rules read from the Code of Virginia in August 2026 — verify with Virginia DMV and VDOT before acting on them. Weight limits at Va. Code § 46.2-1122 with the tandem at § 46.2-1127, the spacing table at § 46.2-1126, the commodity permit at § 46.2-1129 and branding at § 46.2-1600. Node facts from Kyanite Mining Corporation, the Virginia Division of Mineral Mining permit file and the central node list. No bridge measurement exists for these three rows and none is borrowed from elsewhere.
