Fifty-six carriers, most of them hauling general freight
Of the 56 Fair Oaks carriers active on FMCSA’s carrier census, 38 put general freight on their cargo list. If your box truck or tractor did that work, put the title and current registration in one folder before you call.
Ten local carriers haul motor vehicles and five run driveaway or towaway work, according to the same federal carrier census. For a car hauler, send photos of the deck, the ramps and the cab, plus the VIN plate.
Household goods movers number six in Fair Oaks on FMCSA’s census. Moving vans often sit at a home or a small yard between jobs, so tell us where yours is parked and whether a tow truck can reach it from the street.
Who signs
Thirteen trucks at the top, then a handful each
On FMCSA’s carrier census, the top Fair Oaks fleet runs 13 power units with 13 drivers, and the next two run five and three. Keep your own service log handy when you call; it answers most of our questions in one go.
New registrations keep arriving: FMCSA lists nine carriers that started here in 2024 and five more in 2025. If your authority is recent and the truck is titled to the company rather than to you, bring the paperwork that shows who can sign for that company.
Forty of the active carriers run interstate and 16 stay inside Virginia, the carrier census reports, with 11 operating as private fleets that move their own goods. A private-fleet truck carries the business’s name on its title, so the business signs, not the driver.
Tank work east of town, quarries to the west
Tank drivers here load 4.6 miles east at the Fairfax petroleum product terminal, as the Energy Information Administration records it. If your tank truck loads there, mention it when you first contact us, along with any tank inspection paperwork you keep in the cab.
Toward the north-west, Chantilly Crushed Stone Incorporated is a crushed-stone quarry 8.4 miles out, per the Mine Safety and Health Administration. Dump trucks that haul from a pit like that are trucks we buy; photograph the bed, the hoist and the tailgate along with the cab.
Bull Run Plant, another crushed-stone quarry, lies 10.2 miles west on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s list. If the truck is parked at a quarry yard rather than at home, give us the site contact so the pickup can be cleared with whoever runs the gate.
The liquid bulk terminal toward the Potomac
Norfolk Southern TBT, a liquid bulk terminal, sits 13.1 miles east of Fair Oaks in the Bureau of Transportation Statistics listings. Tankers that shuttle to that terminal can be collected wherever they stand; just tell us the address.
Also 13.1 miles east, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics places the Mark Center military installation, with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency at 13.4 miles. A truck kept inside a secured site will need an escort or a gate pass, so arrange access before collection day.
Builders, wholesalers and loading docks around Fair Oaks
In 2023 the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts recorded 41,214 jobs in Fair Oaks, with 479 of them in construction, or 1.2 percent. Contractors’ flatbeds, stake bodies and dump trucks come out of that work, and any of them can be sold with the title in hand.
Fifty-nine construction firms operate around Fair Oaks in the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns. If a contractor’s truck is titled to the firm, an officer of that firm signs, and a copy of the registration helps us match the VIN.
LEHD puts 199 local jobs in transportation and warehousing and 240 in wholesale trade, half a percent and 0.6 percent of the total. Delivery straight trucks from those businesses often sit at a loading dock; tell us the dock hours so we can plan around them.
Fairfax County’s stables, potted plants and hives
USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 77 farms in Fairfax County, with equine, potted flowering plants and honey at the top of the list. Horse operations use pickups with gooseneck hitches and small box trucks, and a farm truck is titled like any other, so have that title ready.
A nursery truck may be registered to the farm business rather than to a person, according to how it was bought. Check the name on the title against the name on the registration before you call, and send photos of the body and the cab.
