Grayson County

A granite quarry six miles out, and a register that names this town under somebody else

The node attached to this place is the Galax Quarry, worked for crushed granite by Cardinal Stone with eight people on the federal register, its coordinate 6.44 miles from the centroid.

No entry for it could be located in the state aggregate approved list, and that is a more interesting absence than it sounds. The register does name this town — under Salem Stone rather than Cardinal Stone. Either the quarry changed hands or there are two quarries here, and the node list does not settle it.

So we record that no entry was located and assert nothing about approval either way. The same pattern shows up twice more in this state, at Woodway and at Glade Spring, where the register names a town a node also names but records a different operator. Guessing which way round it goes is exactly the mistake that had to be corrected five times elsewhere.

The roads out

Measured on Virginia alone, a full legal load crosses every restricted bridge within ten miles

That quarry sits on a road network that does something no other in this work did for a very long time. Read on Virginia’s own file, the circle holds 57 structures with exactly one rated below legal loads — 1.8% — and that one sits 6.56 miles out.

Its rating is 39.0 metric tonnes. A legal 80,000 lb truck grosses about 36.3, so a fully loaded truck crosses it whole. Nothing within ten miles of this quarry, measured that way, requires a part load at all.

That had never happened before. Of the 1,120 nodes researched across every state in this work, the first two for which it was true are this quarry at 39.0 tonnes and the Grayson Stone Quarry at 37.2, eight miles apart in the same county. The next highest anywhere fall just short — 36.6 at a quarry in Alabama, 36.2 at two rows in North Carolina.

Where you stop counting

And then you add North Carolina, and the answer changes completely

That result depends on a decision nobody makes out loud: which file you read. This circle straddles a state line, and North Carolina has more structures inside ten miles of this quarry than Virginia does — 72 against 57.

Computed from every state file with structures in the radius, the same circle holds 129 structures, eleven of them below legal loads, 8.5%, and the nearest is 3.67 miles away. The governing floor is no longer 39.0 tonnes. It is 15.4, about 17.0 US tons, set by a North Carolina structure 4.47 miles out — some 4.4 tonnes of granite over an empty tandem’s tare.

Both numbers are honest and they describe the same roads. One answers "what does Virginia post around this quarry", the other answers "what will a truck actually meet". We publish the second as the working figure and the first because it is remarkable, and we are telling you which is which rather than picking the flattering one.

Virginia paperwork

Three salvage tests in one chapter, and a rebuilt test that runs inside out

Beyond the roads, the title regime follows the truck rather than the route, and Virginia writes it unusually. Va. Code § 46.2-1600 sets three salvage thresholds where most states set one. A late model vehicle is salvage where estimated repair would exceed its actual cash value less its current salvage value. A recovered stolen vehicle acquired by an insurer is salvage above seventy-five per cent of actual cash value. A vehicle is nonrepairable above ninety per cent of its value before the damage.

Subtracting the salvage value makes the base smaller, so that first test is easier to trip rather than harder — the opposite of what comparing the bare percentages suggests. The rebuilt test then runs inside out: it measures the repair cost excluding damage to the engine, transmission or drive axle assembly, the exact inverse of Oklahoma, which counts only the suspension, motor, transmission, frame and structural components.

Late model is the current model year and the five preceding, or any vehicle whose value before the damage met the floor the section names, so an older truck outside that limb sits outside the salvage regime altogether. The repair figure also excludes towing, storage, a temporary replacement and diminished-value compensation — storage and diminished value being two items no other state on file names.

Weight is set at § 46.2-1122 and § 46.2-1127 — 20,000 lb on a single axle, 34,000 lb on a tandem and 80,000 lb gross — and the interstate limits are the same as the highway limits, so there is no inversion here to catch a driver out at the ramp.

What we buy here

The offer does not sort by truck type

Those rules apply to whatever you drive, and the offer does not sort by type either. Tandems and tri-axles off the granite work that Grayson County runs on, including whatever loads 6.44 miles out at the Cardinal Stone pit. Day cabs and road tractors on the runs south over the line. Flatbeds, box trucks, straight trucks and rollbacks out of the trades, plus service bodies and the crew pickups that go with them.

Whatever you drive, the offer doesn’t change. We buy all of them.

Getting it to us is the part that flexes. We can come to you and drive it away, or come and tow it; we can also buy it remotely and arrange the tow with nobody visiting at all, and you are welcome to bring it here instead.

We buy complete trucks. If the engine, transmission, doors, rear ends, drive shafts, wheels or anything under the hood have been removed, we can’t buy it. Small things — a missing bumper — are fine.

Straight answers

The questions we get asked in Galax

  • Does it have to run?No. It does have to be complete — if the engine, transmission, doors, rear ends, drive shafts, wheels or anything under the hood have been removed, we can’t buy it. Rust is not a disqualifier.
  • I never had to run a part load on this side of the line. That matches the record. On Virginia’s own file the binding crossing here rates 39.0 tonnes and takes a full legal truck, which is true of almost nowhere else in this work. Cross into North Carolina and the governing figure drops to 15.4 tonnes 4.47 miles out, so the two halves of the same circle have different rules of thumb.
  • Do you come out to Grayson County? We do. We can also buy it remotely and arrange the tow if that suits you better — the drive is our problem either way.
  • How am I paid?Cash or electronic payment. That is the whole list.
  • What about the title? We need one unless the truck is old enough that it never had one. A lost title has a counter replacement; where none exists there is a bonded route.

Why people call

None of those questions is why the phone rings. Retiring. A medical that went the wrong way. A hauling contract that finished. A tandem standing through a Grayson County winter 6.44 miles from the Cardinal Stone gate, insurance going out on something that is not turning a wheel.

Most of those aren’t happy reasons, and we don’t treat them like they are. Somebody wants a straight answer and the truck gone. That’s what we’re here for.

Virginia title rules read from the Code of Virginia in August 2026 — verify with Virginia DMV before acting on them. Salvage, nonrepairable and rebuilt definitions at Va. Code § 46.2-1600; weight limits at § 46.2-1122 and § 46.2-1127. Bridge figures come from the FHWA National Bridge Inventory 2025 files and are read on item 70 rather than item 41, because the two agree on only 68% of this state’s posted structures. A commercial floor is a MINIMUM inside a ten-mile circle: at 64.1% of the nodes measured in this work a tighter crossing lies between ten miles and twenty, so read it as an upper bound. This node’s ten-mile circle crosses into North Carolina and is computed from both state files; the 39.0-tonne floor and the 1.8% rate are the VIRGINIA-ONLY reading and the 15.4-tonne floor and 8.5% rate are the full circle. Both are stated and the second is used as the working figure. NO ENTRY for this node could be located in the state aggregate approved list. That is recorded as an absence in a name-only register with no coordinates and is NOT a finding that the quarry is unapproved; five records elsewhere once asserted non-approval on this evidence and had to be corrected. Whether Virginia has any seasonal or frost provision was not determined for this node’s research batch and none is stated here. Information, not legal advice.
