Rockbridge County

A limestone mine and a liquid terminal, which is an unusual pair for a town this size

Two nodes attach to this place and they belong to different trades. The one called 01 Mine is a crushed limestone quarry under Rockbridge Stone Products with ten people on the federal register; alongside it sits an RJ Corman liquid bulk terminal, carried with a 75 miles working radius against the quarry’s 35.

A terminal and a quarry in the same place means two quite different kinds of truck on the same roads — tankers on longer legs out of one, tandems on short heavy runs out of the other. It is worth saying that the terminal row carries no headcount at all, and an absent figure is not a zero; it means nobody recorded one.

The quarry sits on the state aggregate approved list under quarry code 05_8013_Q, coarse and fine both approved in 2023, over quartz and limestone. Operator and town agree with the register, which is the basis of the join — the list holds no coordinates, so a match on town alone would attach the wrong company’s approval.

The roads out

One crossing here takes no lorry at all, and it is not the one that governs

Those two sites share a fairly ordinary road network with one number that needs reading properly. Within ten miles the inventory records 173 structures; twelve are coded posted for load and ten are rated below legal loads, 5.8% of them, and the nearest is 5.92 miles off.

The lowest rating among those ten is 10.0 metric tonnes. That sits below the 11.0 an empty tandem already weighs, so no commercial vehicle uses it under any load — it is a crossing for cars, and quoting it as the local limit would be quoting a number no truck has ever tested.

The figure that actually governs is 18.1 metric tonnes, about 20.0 US tons, which admits roughly 7.1 tonnes of stone once the empty tare comes off. Ten restricted crossings sounds like a lot until you notice the nearest is nearly six miles out and the binding one is not the alarming one.

Virginia paperwork

Three salvage tests in one chapter, and a rebuilt test that runs inside out

Beyond the roads, the title regime follows the truck rather than the route, and Virginia writes it unusually. Va. Code § 46.2-1600 sets three salvage thresholds where most states set one. A late model vehicle is salvage where estimated repair would exceed its actual cash value less its current salvage value. A recovered stolen vehicle acquired by an insurer is salvage above seventy-five per cent of actual cash value. A vehicle is nonrepairable above ninety per cent of its value before the damage.

Subtracting the salvage value makes the base smaller, so that first test is easier to trip rather than harder — the opposite of what comparing the bare percentages suggests. The rebuilt test then runs inside out: it measures the repair cost excluding damage to the engine, transmission or drive axle assembly, the exact inverse of Oklahoma, which counts only the suspension, motor, transmission, frame and structural components.

Late model is the current model year and the five preceding, or any vehicle whose value before the damage met the floor the section names, so an older truck outside that limb sits outside the salvage regime altogether. The repair figure also excludes towing, storage, a temporary replacement and diminished-value compensation — storage and diminished value being two items no other state on file names.

Weight is set at § 46.2-1122 and § 46.2-1127 — 20,000 lb on a single axle, 34,000 lb on a tandem and 80,000 lb gross — and the interstate limits are the same as the highway limits, so there is no inversion here to catch a driver out at the ramp.

What we buy here

The offer does not sort by truck type

Those rules apply to whatever you drive, and the offer does not sort by type either. Tandems and tri-axles off the stone work that Rockbridge County runs on, plus the tankers that come with an RJ Corman terminal and its 75 miles of reach. Day cabs and road tractors on the valley runs. Flatbeds, box trucks, straight trucks and rollbacks out of the trades, plus service bodies and the crew pickups that go with them.

Whatever you drive, the offer doesn’t change. We buy all of them.

Getting it to us is the part that flexes. We can come to you and drive it away, or come and tow it; we can also buy it remotely and arrange the tow with nobody visiting at all, and you are welcome to bring it here instead.

We buy complete trucks. If the engine, transmission, doors, rear ends, drive shafts, wheels or anything under the hood have been removed, we can’t buy it. Small things — a missing bumper — are fine.

Straight answers

The questions we get asked in Glasgow

  • Does it have to run?No. It does have to be complete — if the engine, transmission, doors, rear ends, drive shafts, wheels or anything under the hood have been removed, we can’t buy it. Rust is not a disqualifier.
  • Somebody told me there is a ten-tonne bridge here. There is, and no lorry has ever crossed it loaded or empty — 10.0 tonnes is under the weight of an empty tandem. The crossing that governs a working truck rates 18.1 tonnes and the nearest restriction of any kind is 5.92 miles out, which is a good deal less awkward than the raw figure sounds.
  • Do you come out to Rockbridge County? We do. We can also buy it remotely and arrange the tow if that suits you better — the drive is our problem either way.
  • How am I paid?Cash or electronic payment. That is the whole list.
  • What about the title? We need one unless the truck is old enough that it never had one. A lost title has a counter replacement; where none exists there is a bonded route.

Why people call

None of those questions is why the phone rings. Retiring. A medical that went the wrong way. A hauling contract that finished. A tanker or a tandem standing through a Rockbridge County winter beside a terminal with 75 miles of recorded reach and a nearest restricted crossing 5.92 miles off, insurance going out on something that is not turning a wheel.

Most of those aren’t happy reasons, and we don’t treat them like they are. Somebody wants a straight answer and the truck gone. That’s what we’re here for.

Virginia title rules read from the Code of Virginia in August 2026 — verify with Virginia DMV before acting on them. Salvage, nonrepairable and rebuilt definitions at Va. Code § 46.2-1600; weight limits at § 46.2-1122 and § 46.2-1127. Bridge figures come from the FHWA National Bridge Inventory 2025 files and are read on item 70 rather than item 41, because the two agree on only 68% of this state’s posted structures. A commercial floor is a MINIMUM inside a ten-mile circle: at 64.1% of the nodes measured in this work a tighter crossing lies between ten miles and twenty, so read it as an upper bound. The raw minimum operating rating in this circle, 10.0 tonnes, sits below the 11.0-tonne weight of an empty tandem and governs no commercial vehicle; the governing figure is the 18.1-tonne commercial floor and both are stated. The terminal row carries no headcount and none is stated; an absent figure is not a zero. Whether Virginia has any seasonal or frost provision was not determined for this node’s research batch and none is stated here. Information, not legal advice.
