Crushed stone on both sides of the lake
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists the Culpeper Plant, a crushed-stone quarry, 12.3 miles north-west of Lake of the Woods, and the Spotsylvania Plant, another crushed-stone operation, 13.8 miles to the south-east. A dump truck or tri-axle that has run aggregate out of either pit can be sold from wherever it now sits, whether that is a home lot by the lake or a contractor yard nearer the quarry gate.
West of town, two dimension-stone quarries appear in Mine Safety and Health Administration records: Virginia Black Granite Inc. at 13.8 miles and the Jet Mist Quarry at 15 miles. Flatbeds and heavy-spec tractors that moved cut granite block from those sites are trucks we collect, so tell us which quarry it served and send photos of the deck, the frame and the cab together.
If the truck is still parked inside a quarry property, give us the name of whoever controls the gate there and the hours it opens. Collection on a working stone site is planned around that contact, not around you having to move the truck first.
Forty-four small fleets in and around the lake
FMCSA’s carrier census counts 44 active carriers based in Lake of the Woods, and 33 of them list general freight as a cargo they haul. Ten carry motor vehicles, while farm supplies and household goods each appear on seven registrations. Whatever the load was, have the title and current Virginia registration in hand before you contact us; for any of these truck types, those two papers come first.
Of those 44 carriers, the same FMCSA census shows 27 authorised for interstate work, 17 operating intrastate only and 14 running as private fleets that move their own goods. A private-fleet box truck or a one-tractor interstate outfit is sold the same way: one title, one set of keys, and the address where the truck is parked.
On FMCSA’s census figures the biggest local operations run four power units, with two or three drivers apiece, and another runs two power units. If you are selling one unit out of a handful, list the VIN of each truck you are parting with so the paperwork for each is kept separate.
Odometers by the lake
Annual miles on Lake of the Woods trucks
Twelve Lake of the Woods carriers report annual mileage to FMCSA, and the median among them is 32,730 miles a truck. Before you ring us about a Lake of the Woods truck, note its odometer and its VIN side by side on one slip of paper.
New registrations keep arriving: FMCSA’s census records six carriers starting up here in 2024 and seven in 2025. If your operation is one of those and the truck is still financed, have the lender’s name and account details ready, since the lien has to be cleared on the Virginia title before ownership passes.
Builders working out of Lake of the Woods
Construction accounts for 131 of the 739 jobs located in Lake of the Woods, or 17.7 percent, according to the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts for 2023. Contractors who keep a dump truck, a stake body or a crew truck at home between jobs can sell it straight from the driveway.
Orange County’s builders show up too: the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns lists 44 construction establishments for Lake of the Woods. If your truck belongs to a business rather than to you personally, the title will be in the company’s name, so whoever signs for the business should be available when we collect.
Grain, cattle and the Fredericksburg terminal
Around the lake, Orange County holds 430 farms on USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, where corn heads the crop list ahead of soybeans and cattle. Grain trucks, livestock haulers and farm-plated straight trucks parked in a barn or a field can be collected where they stand; tell us whether the ground is firm enough for a tow truck to reach them.
The Energy Information Administration lists a petroleum product terminal at Fredericksburg, 16.9 miles east of the lake. A fuel tanker or a tractor that has pulled tank trailers from that rack can be sold with its tank inspection records, so keep those with the title if you still have them.
From the lake out to Quantico’s gates
Marine Corps Base Quantico lies 22.1 miles north-east of Lake of the Woods, with the Marine Corps Museum at 24.8 miles, as listed by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. If you now work up that way and a truck is still parked at the lake, leave it where it is; we collect it from the lake.
Give us the truck’s location, a contact who can let us reach it, and a way to send the signed title. If the original title is lost, a replacement is requested from Virginia’s title agency before the sale closes, and the duplicate should list you as owner.
The questions we get asked in Lake of the Woods
- My dump truck is parked at a contractor yard near the Spotsylvania Plant. Do I have to bring it to Lake of the Woods? The Spotsylvania Plant sits 13.8 miles south-east of the lake on Mine Safety and Health Administration records, and we come to the truck there. Tell us who runs the yard so access is arranged with them.
- Can a grain truck be picked up from my Orange County corn and soybean farm?Orange County has 430 farms on USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, and a truck kept on one of them is collected from the farm itself. Send the address and say where on the property the truck is parked.
- My Virginia title for the truck went missing at the lake house; which office replaces it?Trucks registered in Lake of the Woods are titled in Virginia, so a duplicate comes from Virginia’s title agency. Request it before the sale, and tell us when you have applied.
- The truck is titled to my Lake of the Woods company rather than to me; whose signature goes on it?FMCSA’s census lists 44 carriers in Lake of the Woods, and a truck titled to one of them is signed over by someone authorised to act for that business. Have that person available on collection day.
