Frederick County
A limestone quarry a mile and a half out, under a company this lane has met before
The node attached to this place is the Middletown Quarry, worked for crushed limestone with 24 people on the federal register, its coordinate 1.46 miles from the centroid. The operator string is O-N Minerals, trading as the Chemstone Company.
That name has come up in this state already, and not tidily. The perlite works at Columbia Furnace carries a permit record naming the same company at an address in Strasburg under a mine name belonging to somewhere else entirely, while its own layer names a different firm. Here the operator field is at least consistent with itself — but it is worth knowing the same corporate name sits behind more than one kind of hole in this valley.
No entry for this quarry could be located in the state aggregate approved list. That is an absence in a name-only register with no coordinates and not a finding that the operation is unapproved; we record the failed lookup rather than converting it into a claim.
The roads out
Three restricted crossings in a hundred and thirty-three, none of them at the gate
Those 24 people load onto a network that mostly stays out of the way. Within ten miles the inventory records 133 structures; three are coded posted for load and three are rated below legal loads, 2.3%, with the two fields agreeing exactly — which across this state they do on only 68% of posted structures.
The nearest sits 3.20 miles out, far enough to be a route decision rather than a daily obstacle. Its rating is 17.2 metric tonnes, about 19.0 US tons, which admits roughly 6.2 tonnes of limestone over the 11.0 an empty tandem already weighs.
Three crossings, none severe, none on the doorstep. By the standards of this state that is an easy place to run a loaded truck out of, and it is a very different working life from the far south-west where the restrictions start at the pit entrance.
Virginia paperwork
Three salvage tests in one chapter, and a rebuilt test that runs inside out
Beyond the roads, the title regime follows the truck rather than the route, and Virginia writes it unusually. Va. Code § 46.2-1600 sets three salvage thresholds where most states set one. A late model vehicle is salvage where estimated repair would exceed its actual cash value less its current salvage value. A recovered stolen vehicle acquired by an insurer is salvage above seventy-five per cent of actual cash value. A vehicle is nonrepairable above ninety per cent of its value before the damage.
Subtracting the salvage value makes the base smaller, so that first test is easier to trip rather than harder — the opposite of what comparing the bare percentages suggests. The rebuilt test then runs inside out: it measures the repair cost excluding damage to the engine, transmission or drive axle assembly, the exact inverse of Oklahoma, which counts only the suspension, motor, transmission, frame and structural components.
Late model is the current model year and the five preceding, or any vehicle whose value before the damage met the floor the section names, so an older truck outside that limb sits outside the salvage regime altogether. The repair figure also excludes towing, storage, a temporary replacement and diminished-value compensation — storage and diminished value being two items no other state on file names.
Weight is set at § 46.2-1122 and § 46.2-1127 — 20,000 lb on a single axle, 34,000 lb on a tandem and 80,000 lb gross — and the interstate limits are the same as the highway limits, so there is no inversion here to catch a driver out at the ramp.
What we buy here
The offer does not sort by truck type
Those rules apply to whatever you drive, and the offer does not sort by type either. Tandems and tri-axles off the limestone work that Frederick County runs on, including whatever loads 1.46 miles out at the Middletown Quarry. Day cabs and road tractors on the valley runs. Flatbeds, box trucks, straight trucks and rollbacks out of the trades, plus service bodies and the crew pickups that go with them.
Whatever you drive, the offer doesn’t change. We buy all of them.
Getting it to us is the part that flexes. We can come to you and drive it away, or come and tow it; we can also buy it remotely and arrange the tow with nobody visiting at all, and you are welcome to bring it here instead.
We buy complete trucks. If the engine, transmission, doors, rear ends, drive shafts, wheels or anything under the hood have been removed, we can’t buy it. Small things — a missing bumper — are fine.
Straight answers
The questions we get asked in Middletown
- Does it have to run?No. It does have to be complete — if the engine, transmission, doors, rear ends, drive shafts, wheels or anything under the hood have been removed, we can’t buy it. Rust is not a disqualifier.
- It ran full loads most days and never had to go round anything. That is consistent with the roads here. Three crossings in 133 sit below legal loads and the nearest is 3.20 miles from the Middletown Quarry, so a truck out of this pit has run straighter routes than most in this state. Straight routes are gentler on a driveline, and it does not change whether we buy it.
- Do you come out to Frederick County? We do. We can also buy it remotely and arrange the tow if that suits you better — the drive is our problem either way.
- How am I paid?Cash or electronic payment. That is the whole list.
- What about the title? We need one unless the truck is old enough that it never had one. A lost title has a counter replacement; where none exists there is a bonded route.
Why people call
None of those questions is why the phone rings. Retiring. A medical that went the wrong way. A hauling contract that finished. A tandem standing through a Frederick County winter 1.46 miles from the Middletown Quarry gate, insurance going out on something that is not turning a wheel.
Most of those aren’t happy reasons, and we don’t treat them like they are. Somebody wants a straight answer and the truck gone. That’s what we’re here for.
Virginia title rules read from the Code of Virginia in August 2026 — verify with Virginia DMV before acting on them. Salvage, nonrepairable and rebuilt definitions at Va. Code § 46.2-1600; weight limits at § 46.2-1122 and § 46.2-1127. Bridge figures come from the FHWA National Bridge Inventory 2025 files and are read on item 70 rather than item 41, because the two agree on only 68% of this state’s posted structures. A commercial floor is a MINIMUM inside a ten-mile circle: at 64.1% of the nodes measured in this work a tighter crossing lies between ten miles and twenty, so read it as an upper bound. NO ENTRY for this node could be located in the state aggregate approved list. That is recorded as an absence in a name-only register with no coordinates and is NOT a finding that the quarry is unapproved. The operator string on this row, O-N Minerals trading as Chemstone Company, also appears in this work against a different site in this valley under conflicting names; that is stated as a property of the records and not as a claim about either operation. Whether Virginia has any seasonal or frost provision was not determined for this node’s research batch and none is stated here. Information, not legal advice.
