Montclair’s small trucking outfits
FMCSA’s carrier census lists 37 active motor carriers based in Montclair, and the three biggest of them run two power units, one and one. A Montclair seller is usually an owner-operator or a two-truck household business, so the person who signs the title is often the same person who drove the truck last week. Have that title and the current Virginia registration in one envelope before you call.
Of those 37 carriers, 24 are authorised for interstate work and 13 stay intrastate, again per FMCSA’s census, with 5 running as private fleets hauling their own goods. Tell us which of those three describes your outfit; an interstate tractor with its USDOT number on the door and a private-fleet straight truck lettered for a contractor need slightly different paperwork at pickup.
New registrations stay modest here: the federal carrier census records 4 carriers starting up in 2024 and 3 in 2025. If you opened your authority in one of those years and are now stepping back, bring the operating authority letter along with the title so we can match the truck to the USDOT number it ran under.
General freight, refuse and dry bulk
General freight is the cargo class most Montclair carriers list, 26 of them according to FMCSA, which in practice means dry vans, box trucks and day cabs pulling enclosed trailers. For a van or box truck, photograph the cargo box interior, the liftgate if there is one, and the plate on the door frame that shows the GVWR.
Eight local carriers declare garbage, refuse and trash on their FMCSA filings, and seven each declare dry bulk commodities and paper products. A roll-off or rear-loader works a different route from a pneumatic tanker, so tell us the body type and the body manufacturer, and send a photo of the hoist, packer or tank alongside the chassis shots.
Paper and dry bulk hauls from Montclair can share a tractor while swapping trailers. If you are selling the tractor alone and keeping the trailer, say so at the start, and leave the trailer unhooked so the tractor can be collected without moving your other equipment.
Dumfries racks and the Graham-Virginia pit
The Energy Information Administration places the DUMFRIES petroleum product terminal 5.6 miles south-east of Montclair and the NEWINGTON 2 terminal 11.6 miles north-east. A tank truck that has shuttled between those two racks should come with its cargo tank test and inspection records, since those travel with the tank rather than the tractor.
Two crushed-stone operations appear in Mine Safety and Health Administration records nearby: GRAHAM-VIRGINIA, 6.7 miles north-east, and STAFFORD, 11.1 miles south-west. Dump trucks and tri-axles that loaded at either pit can be collected from your yard or wherever they last parked; give us the street address and a gate contact if the lot is locked.
Farther out, at 17.4 miles north-east, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics lists Norfolk Southern TBT as a liquid bulk terminal. Sellers whose tractors pulled tankers out of that rail-served site can leave the truck parked near it and send us its location instead of driving back toward Montclair.
Quantico
Near the Marine Corps base
Marine Corps Base Quantico lies 7.6 miles south-west of town and the Marine Corps Museum 6.6 miles south, both on the Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ list of military installations. If your truck is stored on or near base housing while you ship out on orders, tell us the gate it sits behind so collection can be cleared with whoever controls access.
Service members who registered a truck in another state while stationed at Quantico can still sell it from Montclair. Send a photo of the out-of-state title and registration, both sides, and we will tell you what that state’s title agency needs before the truck is picked up.
Distance and work
Short hauls, long hauls and Prince William jobs
FMCSA’s carrier filings show 22 Montclair carriers keeping drivers within 100 miles and 24 sending them beyond that radius, close to an even split. A truck on the long side may be away on a run when you decide to sell, so pick a day it will be home, or give us the yard where it sits between trips.
Across the nine local carriers that report annual mileage, the median comes out at 54,911 miles a truck, per the same FMCSA census. Read the odometer and the engine hours off the dash and send a clear photo of both; those two readings go on the bill of sale.
The Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts put 1,726 jobs in Montclair in 2023, 83 of them, or 4.8 percent, in construction, and County Business Patterns from the Census Bureau records 21 construction establishments. If your dump body or flatbed worked for one of those builders, include any service invoices you kept from the shop that maintained it.
Prince William County farm equipment haulers
USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 316 farms in Prince William County, with soybeans, cattle and horses as the leading products. Grain trucks, livestock haulers and horse-trailer pickups from those farms are part of what we collect, often straight from a barn lot rather than a paved yard.
For a farm-plated truck, find the title even if it has sat in a drawer for years, and note whether the plates are farm-use tags; send a photo of them. If the title cannot be found, Virginia’s title agency issues a replacement; request it before the pickup is scheduled.
The questions we get asked in Montclair
- My tri-axle sits at the stone pit north-east of Montclair; must it come home first?GRAHAM-VIRGINIA sits 6.7 miles north-east of Montclair on Mine Safety and Health Administration records, and the truck can stay there. Send the pit’s street address plus a phone number for the person holding the quarry gate key.
- I am being transferred away from Quantico. Can the truck stay behind?Marine Corps Base Quantico is 7.6 miles south-west of Montclair according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, and a truck left parked there or in town can be collected after you leave. Leave the signed title with someone local or arrange to mail it, and tell us who holds the keys.
- The Virginia title for my Montclair box truck is lost somewhere in the house; where do I start?Montclair trucks are titled through Virginia’s title agency, which issues duplicate titles to the registered owner. Apply for the duplicate first, then contact us with the VIN so the rest is ready when it arrives.
- Will you collect a Montclair roll-off or packer truck?Eight Montclair carriers list garbage, refuse and trash on their FMCSA registrations, and their roll-offs and packers are trucks we collect. Send photos of the body, the hoist or packer, and the chassis plate.
