Jacks Mountain stone
Jacks Mountain and the Roanoke quarry run
Crushed stone comes out of Jacks Mountain Quarry, which sits 9.2 miles south-west of North Shore by the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s mine records. Dump trucks and tri-axles that load at a pit that close often sit in a yard on the edge of town between jobs, and that is where we can collect one. Give us the street address and a photo of the bed raised and lowered.
Roanoke Quarry is the second crushed-stone site on the MSHA list for this area, 19.2 miles north-west toward the city. If your dump body or end-dump trailer has run aggregate between the two quarries, write down which body and hoist are fitted and keep the VIN plate photo with the cab shots; those two details answer most of what we ask about a stone truck.
Petroleum and asphalt
Fuel loads twenty miles up toward Roanoke
Two petroleum product terminals, both named Roanoke in Energy Information Administration records, stand 20.3 miles north-west and 20.8 miles west of North Shore. A tanker or fuel-delivery straight truck based near Smith Mountain Lake country and loading there should come to us with its tank inspection paperwork, since that tells us the trailer’s history in writing.
For liquid bulk, Norfolk Southern TBT at 20.4 miles and Associated Asphalt at 22.7 miles, both north-west, appear on the Bureau of Transportation Statistics terminal list. An asphalt tanker or a heated bulk trailer from that run can stay parked wherever you keep it in Franklin County; send a location pin and the name of whoever can open the gate.
Yard moves
Two Roanoke rail yards north-west of town
Two rail yards sit on the North American Rail Network, kept by the Federal Railroad Administration with the Bureau of Transportation Statistics: South Roanoke at 20.7 miles and Roanoke at 22.5 miles, both north-west of town. A day cab that has spent its shifts hooking and dropping at either Roanoke yard is a tractor we will look at from North Shore.
If your tractor worked yard moves out of South Roanoke and now waits at home in North Shore, photograph the fifth wheel, the frame rails and each tire along with the dash. Pair those shots with the registration card and the pickup can be arranged at your driveway rather than at the yard.
Franklin County farm lanes and barn lots
Franklin County holds 886 farms, and milk leads cattle and corn among its products in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture. Milk tankers, livestock haulers, grain trucks and flatbeds that move hay all come out of a farm economy shaped like that one.
A farm truck in this county frequently lives in a barn lot or along a field lane rather than at a paved yard. Tell us how the truck is reached, whether a rollback or a tow rig can get beside it, and whose land it is on, so the collection is planned around the farm and not the other way round.
Close-in employment
Jobs and contractors close to home
North Shore held 292 jobs in 2023 according to the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts. With a working base of that size, a seller here is often an owner-operator or a small outfit with one or two vehicles parked at the house.
Builders and site contractors account for 48 Franklin County establishments, a figure from the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns. Contractors’ dump trucks, utility bodies and flatbed haulers from those firms can be sold one unit at a time; list each VIN separately and attach the photos for each vehicle to its own message.
Title and records before the pickup
Before anything else, locate the North Shore truck’s title in your files. If it is lost, a replacement comes from the state’s title agency, and that request should go in before the sale so the papers are in hand on collection day for your North Shore truck.
Keep the registration, any inspection sheets and whatever service log the truck carries in one folder in the cab. For a tri-axle off the Jacks Mountain run or a tanker that loaded at Roanoke, that folder plus clear photos is everything we need to begin.
The questions we get asked in North Shore
- Is a fuel tanker that loaded at the two Roanoke product terminals something you collect from Franklin County? The Energy Information Administration lists two Roanoke petroleum product terminals about 20 miles from North Shore, and tankers that worked out of them are trucks we purchase. Include the tank inspection paperwork with your photos.
