Halifax County

One company, two quarries, and thirty miles that change everything

The node attached to this place is a granite quarry run by Southside Materials with twelve people on the federal register, its coordinate 1.63 miles from the centroid and inside the town rather than merely nearest to it.

That company holds exactly two rows in the national list, and they sit about thirty miles apart on opposite sides of the state line. At Shelton, in Caswell County, North Carolina, fifty-one structures within ten miles carry no restriction at all. Here, four of 75 are below legal loads, the nearest 1.32 miles out, and the binding crossing rates 14.5 metric tonnes — about 3.5 tonnes of granite over an empty tandem’s 11.0.

And the law changes with the road. North Carolina allows 38,000 lb on a tandem axle where Virginia allows 34,000, on an identical 80,000 lb gross — so the same truck loaded legally on one side is four thousand pounds over on the other. A machine from this company could have worked either quarry, and the two duty cycles differ in the roads, in the cap and in the legal load.

What that means when you buy one

Here the useful question is which pit, not which company

That split has a practical consequence worth stating, because it inverts the usual advice. Elsewhere in this work — the North Carolina mountains especially, where thirteen operators held twenty rows — the operator was the informative field: knowing the company told you roughly what the truck had done.

Here it tells you almost nothing. One name covers a quarry with no restricted crossings within ten miles and a quarry with a crossing 1.32 miles from the gate that takes three and a half tonnes. Those are different working lives on the same letterhead.

So if you are weighing up a machine that came off this company’s books, the question that earns its keep is which pit it ran out of. We will ask it, and we would rather ask than assume — which is the whole habit this page is built on.

Virginia paperwork

Three salvage tests in one chapter, and a rebuilt test that runs inside out

Beyond the roads, the title regime follows the truck rather than the route, and Virginia writes it unusually. Va. Code § 46.2-1600 sets three salvage thresholds where most states set one. A late model vehicle is salvage where estimated repair would exceed its actual cash value less its current salvage value. A recovered stolen vehicle acquired by an insurer is salvage above seventy-five per cent of actual cash value. A vehicle is nonrepairable above ninety per cent of its value before the damage.

Subtracting the salvage value makes the base smaller, so that first test is easier to trip rather than harder — the opposite of what comparing the bare percentages suggests. The rebuilt test then runs inside out: it measures the repair cost excluding damage to the engine, transmission or drive axle assembly, the exact inverse of Oklahoma, which counts only the suspension, motor, transmission, frame and structural components.

Late model is the current model year and the five preceding, or any vehicle whose value before the damage met the floor the section names, so an older truck outside that limb sits outside the salvage regime altogether. The repair figure also excludes towing, storage, a temporary replacement and diminished-value compensation — storage and diminished value being two items no other state on file names.

Weight is set at § 46.2-1122 and § 46.2-1127 — 20,000 lb on a single axle, 34,000 lb on a tandem and 80,000 lb gross — and the interstate limits are the same as the highway limits, so there is no inversion here to catch a driver out at the ramp.

What we buy here

The offer does not sort by truck type

Those rules apply to whatever you drive, and the offer does not sort by type either. Tandems and tri-axles off the granite work that Halifax County runs on, including whatever loads 1.63 miles from the middle of town at the Southside Materials pit. Day cabs and road tractors on the runs south over the line. Flatbeds, box trucks, straight trucks and rollbacks out of the trades, plus service bodies and the crew pickups that go with them.

Whatever you drive, the offer doesn’t change. We buy all of them.

Getting it to us is the part that flexes. We can come to you and drive it away, or come and tow it; we can also buy it remotely and arrange the tow with nobody visiting at all, and you are welcome to bring it here instead.

We buy complete trucks. If the engine, transmission, doors, rear ends, drive shafts, wheels or anything under the hood have been removed, we can’t buy it. Small things — a missing bumper — are fine.

Straight answers

The questions we get asked in South Boston

  • Does it have to run?No. It does have to be complete — if the engine, transmission, doors, rear ends, drive shafts, wheels or anything under the hood have been removed, we can’t buy it. Rust is not a disqualifier.
  • It ran for the same company on both sides of the line. Then it lived two lives. The North Carolina pit has no restricted crossing within ten miles; this one has a 14.5-tonne crossing 1.32 miles from the gate, and the tandem limit is 38,000 lb there against 34,000 lb here on the same gross. Which pit it worked out of tells us more about the truck than the company name does, so that is what we will ask.
  • Do you come out to Halifax County? We do, and over the line as well if that is where the truck sits. We can also buy it remotely and arrange the tow if that suits you better — the drive is our problem either way.
  • How am I paid?Cash or electronic payment. That is the whole list.
  • What about the title? We need one unless the truck is old enough that it never had one. A lost title has a counter replacement; where none exists there is a bonded route.

Why people call

None of those questions is why the phone rings. Retiring. A medical that went the wrong way. A hauling contract that finished. A tandem standing out a Halifax County winter 1.63 miles from the Southside Materials gate, insurance going out on something that is not turning a wheel.

Most of those aren’t happy reasons, and we don’t treat them like they are. Somebody wants a straight answer and the truck gone. That’s what we’re here for.

Virginia title rules read from the Code of Virginia in August 2026 — verify with Virginia DMV before acting on them. Salvage, nonrepairable and rebuilt definitions at Va. Code § 46.2-1600; weight limits at § 46.2-1122 and § 46.2-1127. Bridge figures come from the FHWA National Bridge Inventory 2025 files and are read on item 70 rather than item 41, because the two agree on only 68% of this state’s posted structures. A commercial floor is a MINIMUM inside a ten-mile circle: at 64.1% of the nodes measured in this work a tighter crossing lies between ten miles and twenty, so read it as an upper bound. The comparison with this operator’s second quarry is between two rows in this same work, one in Virginia and one in North Carolina, each measured on its own state file. Tandem-axle limits: 34,000 lb under Va. Code § 46.2-1127 and 38,000 lb under N.C.G.S. § 20-118, on an identical 80,000 lb gross. Headcounts are as reported to the federal mine regulator; 179 of the 349 Virginia rows in this work state none, and an absent figure is not a zero. Whether Virginia has any seasonal or frost provision was not determined for this node’s research batch and none is stated here. Information, not legal advice.
