Plants and payroll
Plant shifts, coil loads and box trucks at the gate
Of the 7,572 jobs the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts placed in Stuarts Draft for 2023, manufacturing held 4,420, or 58.4 percent. If your tractor or straight truck spent its days shuttling between those plant gates, tell us which sites it served and keep its registration and any service records in the cab for the day we collect it.
Transportation and warehousing accounted for 1,633 of those 2023 jobs, a 21.6 percent share in the LEHD figures. A box truck, day cab or yard tractor from that kind of work is something we buy; send photos of the cab, the frame and the plate along with the VIN so we can look it over before we call you back.
Sand, gravel and stone on the south-east edge
Two sand and gravel operations, D M Conner Sand Co and ACRES SAND & STONE, are listed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration about 1.1 miles south-east of town. A dump truck or tri-axle parked at either pit can be collected right where it sits; give us the pit’s name and someone who can let a driver in.
Farther out, the Augusta Plant crushed-stone quarry lies 13.9 miles north according to MSHA records. Aggregate haulers parked up there can stay put rather than coming back to Stuarts Draft. Have a title in your name and a current registration card ready for pickup.
Twenty-nine hometown carriers: logs, coil and machinery
FMCSA’s carrier census lists 29 active carriers based in Stuarts Draft, with 17 hauling general freight, 7 moving logs, poles, beams and lumber, 7 carrying machinery and large objects and 6 moving metal sheets, coils and rolls. Log trucks, flatbeds, lowboys and coil-rated tractors from any of those lines are welcome; note the trailer type and any special equipment when you write to us.
Eighteen of those carriers run interstate and 11 stay within Virginia, while 12 are private fleets hauling their own goods, per the same federal census. For an interstate tractor, keep the cab card and the title together for the driver who comes out.
Among the 14 carriers reporting mileage to FMCSA, the median works out to 17,743 miles per truck in a year. That is a plain figure, not a judgment; just read the odometer when you contact us and include it with your photos.
Five-, six- and nine-truck outfits and new start-ups
The three largest fleets in town run 9, 6 and 5 power units, with 13, 4 and 12 drivers respectively, according to FMCSA’s census. Whether you are selling one tractor or retiring several from a small fleet, list each VIN and where each truck is parked, and we will plan the collection unit by unit.
FMCSA’s carrier census shows 3 new carriers registered here in 2025 after none in 2024. A newer operator selling a first truck should have the title, or the lender’s lien release if the truck was financed, ready before we set a pickup.
Drivers split almost evenly in FMCSA’s filings, with 39 working within 100 miles and 38 reaching beyond it. A long-haul sleeper may be parked away from Augusta County when you decide to sell; tell us the town or truck stop and we will go there.
Cattle, milk and construction crews
USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counted 1,460 farms in Augusta County, with cattle, milk and corn at the top. Livestock haulers, milk tankers and grain trucks off those farms often sit in a barn lot rather than a yard, so share the farm address and a gate code if there is one.
County Business Patterns from the Census Bureau records 25 construction establishments in the area, and LEHD counts 137 construction jobs for 2023. Dump trucks, flatbeds and service bodies from those crews are part of what we purchase; a photo of each side, the dash and the VIN plate gives us a clear start.
The questions we get asked in Stuarts Draft
- My dump truck sits at a sand pit just south-east of Stuarts Draft; does it have to leave the pit before you collect? The Mine Safety and Health Administration places two sand and gravel operations about 1.1 miles south-east of town, and we collect from pits like those directly. Tell us which one, and arrange for someone to open the gate.
- I pull beams and poles off Augusta County woodlots with a self-loading log rig; would you collect that whole setup?Seven Stuarts Draft carriers in FMCSA’s census haul logs, poles, beams and lumber, and their log trucks and trailers are trucks we purchase. Start with the tractor’s VIN, a few photos of the bunks and whose name is on the title.
- My Stuarts Draft sleeper is three states away on a run this week; can the sale go ahead while it is out?Thirty-eight of the drivers on Stuarts Draft carriers’ FMCSA filings work beyond 100 miles, so trucks here are often parked far from home. Give us the location where it will be stopped and a contact there, and we arrange pickup at that spot.
